Jim Henson based the 'balcony guys' on two professors he admired at the University of Maryland, where he studied. He named them Statler and Waldorf, after two famous NYC hotels. My partner (The Girlfriend™) had classes with one of the profs, and told me he looked exactly like his muppet character.
