I'm selling my beloved Roland SVC350 vocoder in order to pay bills. It's on eBay for £1500. But they'll rob me of £200+ so hit me up if you're minted, trustworthy, and in the market for a legendary bit of vintage gear.

Opening riff from Mike's Song randomly floated up from the depths of my mind. Haven't heard it in ~25 years. Took a while to track down the version I know (Slip Stitch and Pass). Turns out I remember nearly the whole thing.

WTF. The electric company in Texas doesn't have a map of outages so people have been using the Whataburger App to figure out who lost power. This is like when Homer was using the Krusty Burger map when they got lost at sea.

I think one major factor in the exhaustion/disappointment around the Biden campaign is the same as what happened with the Clinton campaign in '16, namely that both candidates should be absolutely murdering Trump, stunting on him 24/7 for being a stupid asshole who hates everyone, and they're not

pssst a tip from a friend: the application for the Committee on Gender Equity in Linguistics travel grant for LSA 2025 is still open. We haven't received too many applications; try it, you never know. It's a straightforward form, but lmk if you have questions 🐦🐦

Every big media organization was so crossed-up by Trump winning in 2016 that they have been behaving and hiring as if Long Island-Coded Suburbo-Racist Sociopathy was on an unstoppable ascent worldwide, and interpreting everything backwards from there. It turns out most people actually hate it!

Dem weirdos dreaming up tournament-style solutions to Joe Biden being the nominee and Catturd-grade reactionary types crying about cheating in the French election have one crucial thing in common, which is that they transparently lack the emotional maturity and patience required to be sports fans.

On top of everything else I wonder how much this is a sociological function of the NYT's deep sourcing/personal connections to these campaigns and their staffs vs. Trump's. Like the journalistic impulse collides with the fact that their college roommates all work for Dem campaigns/administrations

You can have concerns about Biden's age, but still be absolutely appalled about editorial choices that convey the issue as more important than the Supreme Court offering a pre-emptive thumbs up to a criminal presidency

I mean, contrastive focus is clearly present in the Dundee construction, but I'm not sure I see how it gives rise to the intensity reading. It's an ingredient, but one of many.

I guess I'm not sure which phenomenon we're aiming at. The prosodic contrast between the demonstratives alone? Or the kind of meta-semantic effect of that in combination with the polarity contrast?

There are two elements to the immunity decision that are particularly extreme in a way that many will miss: (1) motive is irrelevant and (2) immune acts are not just excluded from prosecution, they’re excluded from evidence. /1
