had to gently break it to my mom that her friends who are already planning on moving to Italy may not in fact be escaping fascism to the extent they think they are

I hope her friends know what it's like to grow old and die in a country where 1) you don't fully master the language, 2) have no family to rely on and 3) have no really safe legal status.

I had to explain to my dad that he can't just move elsewhere because other countries also don't have open borders and aren't necessarily looking to let in a bunch of new refugees from America.

As an Italian, I can't disagree on this 😢 About other options, the political outlook in the UK is somewhat good, but the weather definitely isn't. Probably the north of Spain is the place I would personally choose for now.

The solution is very simple: move to Bologna. It's a beautiful city where their two favourite things are delicious food and shooting fascists.

Doesn't have the full on randomness of Trump style fascism though. Which may or may not be an advantage depending.

I assume most Americans have no idea what life is actually like in places like Italy. Politics there have been a mess for a long long time. And fascism is popular, especially in the North

As an Italian who moved abroad 11 years ago, I second this message. Ironically, fascism is against our constitution but the ideology never really left the country, unfortunately. I mean, the bastards didn't even have Nuremberg trials, so of course they feel they did nothing wrong.

i think of this as the ✨magical europe✨ delusion. like, having experienced "universal" healthcare, it's not as great as people imagine (and it's not universal) i told my husband he shouldn't go for US citizenship so he could keep his austrian citizenship but lol that one's a nonstarter too

I'm a little worried about stuff here in Finland but it also seems like a lot of people are MAJORILY pissed at the current coalition. Hopefully I'll be able to vote by the time the next set of parliamentary elections come 'round.
