pretty wild how much mainstream press coverage just elides the fact that Israel's attack on a consulate precipitated this. the general impression to a casual reader at most mainstream outlets would be that Iran launched an unprecedented attack out of no where
And Iran's retaliation so far is really mild given the gravity of the consulate attack. They waited, they informed all the regional governments of their intentions, they made sure the US knew. Almost everything they launched was shot down. Its Netanyahu that's hell bent on escalation.
I have been thinking this. The unprecedented was not the massive response by Iran, but that Israel destroyed another country's consulate. Every story should lead with that fact.
It’s the same instinct the mainstream press shares for Israel and Trump: that’s just their nature to act with reckless arrogance and disregard of longterm consequences. Just shrug your shoulders and move on
It’s seriously breaking my brain. Like I guess even basic journalism is too much? Why should we even pretend these jobs matter? Like just let the CIA post their press releases directly why bother with the facade of a middle man
Which sources omitted this??? Widely reported & discussed in the run-up of threats/counter-threats, US reaction, US intel.
Unaware Israel had not (officially) acknowledged.
Aware of controversy re whether this was an embassy, a consulate, or a "consulate" (as in Benghazi).
The decision where to draw the origin point on the escalation ladder between Iran and Israel since 2006 or so has been basically 100% determined by which side the speaker likes more
Attack on a "consulate" but the ambassador's family was untouched and at least 3 senior military officers were killed. Doesn't sound like a whole lot of diplomacy was going on.
Israel has earned deep skepticism, but it would be a serious mistake to take any of Iran's claims at face value.
the proximate cause is BURIED. it’s terrifying and truly makes one wonder, is it always like this? and the answer, one realizes, must be yes. in the same way that, with few exceptions, professions as portrayed on film look silly to professionals, while we laypeople muse “That must be how it is.”
The consulate was in response to the drone strike on Eilat
You don't get to lob munitions at navy ships in their home port and think there won't be blow back
"widely blamed on Israel, although it does not publicly acknowledge it."
Seems like they could've mentioned that Israel defended the strike and said it was a valid target. Probably ran out of words or something!
There's also this weird expectation that Israel will respond to the attack, as if that's a totally rational thing to expect. But they never apply this same logic to the original attack by Israel.
