Like that guy in the Farmers Insurance ad, I’ve seen a few things. Occasional writer, professional nerd, perpetual overthinker. she/her 🏳️‍⚧️✡️

Folks, I may have a PhD in history-including US politics history-but the last several years I’ve been working in public health as a science writer. One of my areas of focus is Aging, including Alzheimer’s and related dementias (AD/RD). I find the discourse around Biden really troubling.

A few months before he was reelected overwhelmingly, it was widely reported that Ronald Reagan napped during cabinet meetings.

I think we’re at the stage of “in any ten thousand words Biden’s loyalists could possibly say about him, the press will find ten words to wrap around his neck.”

This makes for a strange kind of affinity with the conservatives who are brought to op-ed pages “for balance” — conservatives who live in blue states, attended elite universities, and are culturally alien to most of the actual Republican base.

They’re liberals who crave respect from conservatives. So when conservatives dis the NYT, the editors pander harder. But when other liberals (such as Biden) dis the NYT, the editors become righteously offended. It’s middle-school popularity-seeking, utterly divorced from the substance of politics.

It would be wonderful… for horserace journalists. I think, very often, about the CEO who said that Trump would be bad for the country, but good for CBS.

The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them

Ed Markey has introduced the Judiciary Act of 2023, which would add four more justices to the court.

So far it's co-sponsored by Tina Smith and Elizabeth Warren (and is supported by California senator-in-waiting Adam Schiff). I hope this now gets more momentum.

At least once a week, I have the thought that "more people need to read such and such section of Democracy for Realists." So, take this as your sign to read, or re-read, Democracy for Realists.

Did you know research shows that the mere fact of a police stop is enough to make someone less likely to vote?

One more way communities are pushed away from politics: researcher @jbenmenachem.com called it a “vicious feedback loop.” boltsmag.org/a-police-sto...
