climate change is real and bad and batteries are a necessary part of the solution, but the idea that we should eliminate any kind of environmental restriction on batteries and related extraction/manufacturing won't age well (and yes, people really do advocate for this)

Indian banks see climate change as their biggest source of systemic risk in the Reserve Bank

(while they downplayed the usual concerns — asset quality, interest rate risk, capital outflows...)

Suddenly I'm a fan of first past the post in the UK In 2019 the lin dems got 3.7m votes and 11 seats. In 2024 they got 3.5m votes and 71 seats! Also this year Sinn Fein got 210k votes and 7 seats while reform got 4.1m votes and only 4 seats.

No coincidence that Robinson is using the same "you made us do it" rhetoric as Kevin Roberts--it's a textbook strategy for persuading people to get over their moral scruples and just do it.

Electric vehicles can save lives by polluting the climate less than fossil-fueled vehicles in most places. Yet EVs are much heavier and accelerate faster, so are more dangerous in crashes. @costasamaras.bsky.social argues that increased car-crash deaths could be on par with lives saved via climate.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

In addition to having a carbon bubble linked to denialism about the energy transition, we have a bubble of asset valuations flowing from denial of climate impacts. The Fed and other regulators with responsibilities to protect financial stability are moving far too slowly on this market failure.

may have been Koopmans for all we know I'll ask Bill next time I see him while everyone is talking about the social cost of carbon, the backstop is the real driver of deep emission cuts in integrated assessment models

Nordhaus (1973) has a backstop, writes about it as if it is something new. (Nordhaus drops the backstop in 1975, re-adopts it in 2008.) Manne (1976) does not have a backstop. Manne (1980) does and refers to "Carter" (i.e., Nordhaus).
