the thing with climate is every tenth of a degree matters it's not "well, we're over 2C, we're doomed, the end" 2.5C is worse than 2.4 is worse than 2.3, etc. do we need to do much more? absolutely, but literally any marginal climate improvement is important

Not to pick on Micah at all... If you want to better persuade Americans then include F equivalents in climate change discussions. Just a couple of degrees doesn't sound significant to most Americans outside of scientists. 4.5 F--or better, rounded to 5 F--is obviously significant to Americans.

yeah, i do wonder how much doomerism on this specifically is due to people thinking 1.99 will be just fine, but if we hit 2, we might as well hit 20 it's a sliding scale and where the slider stops really really really really matters

Also he has done more than the last ~ four presidents combined. It's not even like a marginal thing. It's actually a thing he's done better than any plausible alternative would have, and by a lot

What he’s accomplished is truly remarkable. Messaging is a big problem though. Policy wonks need to talk to normal people. Nobody knows wtf IRA is. Once you get the legislation through, you start calling it something something catchy, like, I don’t know, the energy future bill. The energy jobs bill.

Also, if time is of the essence, four years of Trump reversing all that policy guarantees we get more irreversible warming even if someone better gets elected in 2028.

"Enough to meaningfully matter" what the fuuucccckkkk?!?!?! These folks seem to believe that the world will literally end in their lifetimes. I wonder if maybe it's narcissism - an inability to tolerate the idea of a world that continues on after their death.

Some of these people just need to admit that they’d rather complain about Trump running climate mitigation and adaptation programs into the ground instead of having to roll up their sleeves and get things done.

this seems to be the one issue this DOESN'T apply. why would incremental progress be acceptable if it means the end of human civilization? you're really ok with "good enough"? there is no incremental method to destroy fossil fuel companies.

I think it's best to think if the degrees C increase as a sort of logarithmic scale, like for earthquakes

It also has massive implications for what, if any, types of reversal technologies may or may not be feasible/necessary if and when they become viable.
