This is a of a piece with climate change and the last two decades of political coverage. The need to describe both sides results in reporting that places them on level footing and too often, actually elevates the side most divorced from reality.

That's the problem with the modern mainstream media. They misrepresent things (Biden, Trump) we can objectively see ourselves for clicks and vibes and to conform with their preconceived notions...and then they say Democracy dies in darkness and trust us. How can we sift good reporting from bad now?

The article says that Biden wasn't "old" (aka displaying these new symptoms) in 2023, but a review of @washingtonpost.com 2023 Biden articles definitely has him as being too old for the job then. So which is it? If you were wrong last year, why should we believe you now?

Nothing more patriotic than cancelling your NYT subscription and using that money to support local press, candidates, etc.

i was just going to make a post about this. if trump decides you are an enemy of the state or a “threat to national security” and has you deported, citizenship or not, there’s nothing you can do to get home. he has full legal power to render you stateless.

Yea, when folks find out I served in the infantry there is often an immediate assumption about my views (that I am happy to disabuse them of). The military contains multitudes, admittedly far fewer whose parents make hundreds of thousands of dollars. But we're all reflected in the ranks.

This. For some reason administration types seem to be much more comfortable overpaying for tech and consultants than using that money to hire employees who will care and invest their time for years in the organization.

Admittedly, I view a lot of things through the lens of writing (see writer in my description 😄), but I was surprised at the similarities between that and being a parent. Definitely some cross functional lessons.

The 14th Amendment says if you were involved in an insurrection you can't be president. SCOTUS said they won't allow anyone to enforce that because of reasons they made up.
The Constitution doesn't say the president is immune from criminal law. SCOTUS decided he is because of reasons they made up.

You're entitled to your despair. But understand that when you catastrophize on social media, you risk spreading learned helplessness. Which is exactly what fascists want, for people to lie down and cry.

Here's a path forward I see..
1. Vote overwhelmingly
2. In first 100 days...
2a. Remove filibuster
2b. Court reform (expand to 13 to start)
2c. Pass law to make PR and DC states
3. Pass a legislative slate that puts $ in the pocket of every family <$400k
4. Challenge as many SC rulings as possible

But none of this happens without number 1: vote overwhelmingly. If Dems don't control Congress and the Presidency in large numbers then the gun remains cocked and loaded, the trigger waiting for a finger.

The reason for 2 is obvious. 3 is to pass things like childcare, food, and job legislation paid for by higher taxes of the ultra wealthy. Make it so popular it can't be undone without riots. 4 is the longer pathway to unfucking the loaded gun(s) the SC has put to the head of Lady Liberty.

It's unbelievable, but of course it's not about Trump, it's about any warm body that could get elected and agree to give the corporate elite, the ultra rich, the white christian nationalists, the evangelicals, etc. everything they want. For that, they will sacrifice American democracy. And gladly.

"With fear for our democracy, I dissent," is about as bedrock and terrifying and vital a statement as you're going to get. That's a line you spraypaint on walls, that you ink into your skin. And it's chilling that it is necessary to say at all.

Last repost...I cancelled my @nytimes.com subscription yesterday. I can't support a newspaper that trumpets Trump's deranged lies and rants as a "forceful performance". Just shit vibes and clickbait masquerading as journalism. A shame, we need actual news orgs more than ever. The NYT is not it.

Looking back, I appreciate the editor from Tor who in one conversation told me:
1- They weren’t picking up my new series
2- They weren’t going to publish the last book of The Long Price Quatret in paperback
3- He was sure that someday I’d write a mature book.
Dinner anecdote for life, that.

Also very American, our history is one of progress, then regressive pulling in the brakes until progressives wrest back control again. A few times it's been a close call. This, unfortunately is one of those inflection points.

Well, when everyone else got to learn and improve decades to centuries after the OG set up theirs...yes. It doesn't help that the largest generation in our history is aging out, but trying to drag us back to the values they think they had in their youth. We'll get back, it will take a decade.
