I think the general theory is that incumbents usually do poorly on the first debate because they've had the least opportunities to practice since they are usually not being debated during the primaries.

Except for the aforementioned episode, they do stay in an observation area of the lab. The explanation of their return is that they also suffer from the "Swiss cheese memory" side effect that Sam has, so they remember almost nothing or think of it as a fragments of a dream.

This is the absolute correct ranking as far as Burton's movie is considered. I actually fell asleep in the theater watching that one: something I hadn't done in a theater since I was probably 8. I was 32.
