They flood the streets with flags and rifles. Catchy though their slogans might be, the meaning is illusive. Fierce voices and practiced words obscured by references to slights too few recognize. Yet when the crowd cheers, the people cheer with them, unaware of the horror they cry out for.

easy to chalk the stuff in france up to some vague platitude about ~voting~ but it feels to me like more proof that you have to give people something to vote FOR, and that socialism remains better equipped to beat fascism than liberalism does! just one gal’s opinion

I watched the Fifth Element last night, and I know this is an annoying thing to say, but it is nice to see an expansive sci fi world which only exists in one movie. No spin offs, no sequels, no prequels, just one story.

Folks feel they’re doing their part. If things still aren’t improving, it must be because they’re the only one trying. IMO we’re seeing a system that creates winners and losers work—then assigning blame to one party when both prop up the status quo. Folks think the only options are bad or worse.

I think stories should explore both sides of this more frequently. It feels like the cliché is represented as so critical that the choice’ll define the development or like a sudden, callous move. But it’s always about the character’s psyche and not the impact on those around.

Growing up in a white, southern Baptist home really highlighted how divorced some Christians can be from their ideological roots. Too many don’t know the old Jewish stories that set up the New Testament. Too many miss how much America looks more like the Romans in our conquests. 😔
