Oh it’s gonna be fun when the price doubles between when you take an item off the shelf and when you get to the register.

"That's not the price it showed when I took it. I don't want it now." This idea will create a ridiculous amount of food waste as price-changed food sits in a cart until closing and is no longer sellable

Fixed pricing is part of what made Quaker businesses so trustworthy. Integrity means you charge with fairness and transparency.

If they do this, we should make a practice of abandoning items when it rings up as higher than it was when we picked it up. Flood the system. Cause chaos.

I have worked for cora (french superstore chain) 2 decades ago and often cashiers had updated prices because our boss neglected to update them in time and customers were very angry with me

most stores here have had those for years they look pretty similar to normal labels, you wouldn't know the difference unless you look closely

They can try but this pushing people over the edge. It’s hard enough to afford to exist these days but if we can’t even calculate total costs anymore, the precious capitalist machine will start cracking.

The FIRST, I mean the FIRST time I place an order on Instacart, pay for it, and then the amount charged to my credit card for those items is more than the cart amount when I paid, I'm sueing.

Here I am, all the way cross country, and still cheering on my hometown Publix Supermarkets. One of their core beliefs and policies is "If the price at the register is different than the price on the shelf, the item is free." Surge pricing ain't gonna fly with them.

When I did grocery pick up during the worst of the pandemic I learned really quick not to place an order on Tuesday night for Wednesday pick up, because that was the day the weekly sales ended. I’d stocked up on something at a great discount. When I went to customer service they said “too bad”

Most Supermarkets here use electronic labeling just for the benefit of not having to print and change them every time the price or package size changes. Works for special offers as well.

How would that even function? I know people who price their baskets down to nearly the last penny to make sure they have enough to pay for it. This would be such a nightmare for anyone who's on a really tight budget 😬

FWIW, supermarket prices here in France are electronic like that and they don’t change on a whim. But, there’s *lots* more price regulation and oversight here than in the US. So, yeah, probably not gonna work out in the consumer’s favor. 😬

There's also the probability that these labels may be enacted about as well as anything computerized is, these days. "Why is the asparagus priced at 999&#@.999999 a pound?" "Yeah, they're doing an update to fix that. Can you come back in 72 hours?"

While they’re saving grocery workers’ time not having to change price labels, they’re wasting customers’ time trying to figure out what shelf items cost. Scan tags with my phone, you say?

Over here we have manually updated eInk price labels in multiple stores. They have no wireless connection or anything else like that, they use IR from a handset the employees use during inventory checks and restocking
