Melbourne Airport is a significant employment centre, and it absolutely makes sense to upgrade bus routes in the area as soon as possible - and even when the rail link eventually opens, they will provide a more direct link from some nearby suburbs. infrastructuremagazine.com.au/2024/07/02/m...

We got tricked by science fiction into thinking a futuristic city is all about flying cars and crystal towers and hologram billboards but what it really looks like is nice apartment blocks, good mass transit, pedestrian zones with shade trees and safe bike lanes.

I'm just going to keep saying this: the facts do not matter here. The more distant and improbable nuclear power is, the better Dutton's discourse steering technique works. If there are spats about pretend machines while actual coal plant extensions get justified as 'necessary evils' - he's won.

Fresh calls for reform of Ballarat's bus network.
"They need to understand if you're going to build more houses, more people are going to move in and you're going to need more transport, more frequently,"

- cheap fares drive mode shift best when the current fares are overpriced. Qld fares are currently mostly okay, and this scheme won't apply to the actually-overpriced airport train fares. (/end thread)

- that patchiness matters partly because inner-city shifts may be from walking or cycling (not driving) while the outer suburban drivers (who'll keep driving) cause most of the congestion

- the evidence suggests actual mode shift (& associated savings) will be patchy. Where services are good, uptake will increase (to the point of causing crowding) but this won't make many people get on an hourly bus.

- there's an election in Oct that Labor looks set to lose. The timing makes it hard to see this as anything but vote-buying - it's very interesting (and positive) to see this framed pretty much equally as saving existing PT users money, saving drivers who shift to PT money, and reducing congestion

With the Brunswick skyrail project delayed by three years, there’s a golden opportunity to renew Sydney Rd with accessible tram stops, safe cycling routes, and a better experience for people visiting shops and restaurants. It’s long overdue and would benefit the whole community.

For what it's worth, I've been listening to oil and gas executives repeat this same reasoning over the last 18 months, right down to comments about how "no one wants to see demand destruction" by ending gas connections to new homes.

Here's some facts about gas use in Australia Madeline King probably won't talk about. First up, gas use for electricity generation has halved in the past decade. What's more, Q4 of 2023, was the lowest on record since the year 2000.

Buses have huge potential to connect people, reduce the cost-of-living pressure of transport costs, and cut congestion and emissions - but for that we need investment in a system of #BetterBuses that works for people, with direct routes and frequent timetables.

Reminder: Tesla's market cap means it is "worth more" than GM, Ford, Stellantis, Volkswagen, Daimler-Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Suzuki, Mazda, Nissan and Renault *combined*. In 2023 Tesla sold 1.8 million cars. Those others sold... about 56 million. The market is not rational.

In the peaks there's a Ballarat train every 20mins, AND a Melton train every 20mins. From 6.48 there's one train every 40mins to cover both crowds. The 7.28 is just 3 carriages, & standing room only from Sthn Cross. There's no reason they couldn't run more evening services!

This is a special report that a gov't agency puts out every year in Aus rattling a bell to encourage investment in new fossil fuel supply, instead of cutting down on demand.
There's no other way to describe this than basic fossil fuel denialism.

The fumes in Southern Cross are another reason we need to phase out diesel trains. A good first step would be for Labor to hurry up and electrify the Melton and Wyndham Vale lines, bringing them onto the suburban Metro network. The West deserves clean, frequent Metro services.

One of the most broken things about Bluesky is the way it handles replies. If someone replies to their own post to make a thread, something they clearly want followers to see, it only shows the initial post. Yet if they reply to someone else, which isn't intended for everyone, it does show it.
