Does anyone else find it weird how we just take for granted that there is a star that just hangs there in our sky. We think of it as the Sun and don’t give it much more thought but there is an entire star that is just there and we can see its features, study it, feel its radiation, etc. A STAR ⭐️

Every spring, I teach an observing class where students go to the telescope, collect their own data and calibrations overnight, then bring everything home and analyze it. The last several years, I have focused our observations on asteroids because: 🔭 🧪 👩🏻🔬

Yes, Pride is "too corporate". There's a lot of pinkwashing. But corporates are made up of people. Queer people like me. And they have influence at government level*. So bring on the parade. *My company helped get the Pink Dot Parade in Singapore legalised.

I often talk to people who feel like it’s “too late” - too late to change careers, too late to learn a new language, too late to go back to school - and I’m here to tell you that it’s not too late.

We got tricked by science fiction into thinking a futuristic city is all about flying cars and crystal towers and hologram billboards but what it really looks like is nice apartment blocks, good mass transit, pedestrian zones with shade trees and safe bike lanes.

This is really, really cool!!! I think being able to give people a starter pack is a great way to make onboarding easier. Thank you Bluesky team! I think I'm going to put a starter pack link at the end of every talk I do from here on out, and I encourage others in scisky to do the same 👀

The earthward face of Sol is still looking mighty active today, with three (!) large sunspot groups: Active Regions 3712, 3713 and AR3716. Though this threesome is now rotating away from us, they still have the ability to impact space weather as they head towards the solar limb.

Not quite finished today, but hopefully tomorrow! It’s the Crab Nebula (JWST + Chandra data). I can paint ~4 hours until I am in too much pain. I have a wonky arm bone that causes issues. The only thing that helps is not using my hand. I actually sleep in a hard cast several nights a week 😅

JWST has discovered 2 of the earliest galaxies known, both at redshift of ~14 (i.e. the Universe had expanded by a factor of 15 since the observed light left the galaxies). This continues the trend of finding surprisingly massive and evolved galaxies at very early times. 🧪🔭 arxiv.org/abs/2405.18485
