Today in 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the consequential Federal Aid Highway Act, which created the 41,000-mile interstate highway system and was justified and promoted partly on the basis that it would enable the swift evacuation of US cities in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack.

American politicians are babies. 13K on 1M contract? Come on. The standard Russian “roll back” is 20% of the contract value.

Fascism on both sides of the pond inspired each other. American industrialists including Fred Koch, Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan & James Mooney of GM, and Thomas Watson Sr were known to actively do business with the 3rd Reich. European Fascist leaders took cues from Manifest Destiny & US eugenicists.

A) you should listen to this excellent conversation. B) I want to do a wee thread (might expand it into something bigger) on one theme that emerges here--whether or not it matters if we use the word "fascist" to describe Trump. I'm going to make an argument for why we SHOULD use the word.

Everyone, left and right, is worried about the future of American “democracy.” I wrote about this a while ago: What to make of the fact that Republicans are also concerned about threats to democracy, and why that’s actually not reassuring at all: 1/

What they worry about is losing *their* democracy: A restricted version of democracy that leaves entrenched hierarchies of race, gender, and religion largely intact. They are committed to defending their white Christian patriarchal democracy against multiracial pluralism. 8/

That’s one of the key arguments in the book: that Trump combines elements of the ethno-nationalist (Buchanan), the billionaire populist (Perot) - and adds the mafia patriarch of John Gotti, who plays a big part in the book also.

This review of John Ganz' history of the 90s reminds me that I once had the thought, and never did anything with it, "Trump 2016 is what happens if Ross Perot 1992 and Pat Buchanan 1992 were somehow the same guy."

The issue as I see it is that you could never know if a study done using simulated research subjects generalizes to human subjects without doing the human study to compare. At which point why bother doing the AI study in the first place?

Awww the sweet smell of rotting infrastructure corpses - brings back memories of 1990s in post-Soviet Russia where the scraping for parts by the social conservatives, namely the former Communist Party bosses, was happening very literally.

www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res... how many noncitizens voted in the U.S. elections?

Anybody claiming anything more than two dozen speaks from their privilege bias of waving a jaded piece of paper with no photos - their birth certificate. Let’s just say, my immigrant experience begs to differ.

It also seems to have become something of a secondary concern in this whole affair that Israel targeted largely Black voters by impersonating them. One of the identities stolen was that of a 21 year old Broadway actor who tragically died in 2015. Is the US holding anyone accountable?

Or more bluntly, it's a terrible, disqualifying worldview for a judge. There's a difference between judicial bias (which is inevitable to some degree) and believing your role is to be an advocate for one side in a case before you.

Alito's worldview is one of a radical: we are in a war, where one side must defeat the other. Needless to say, this is a terrible mindset to bring to the interpretation of complex laws to govern all people, including those who disagree with you.

There was a book published at the turn of the century titled?unabashedly “Statistics in the XXI century”. It is a collection of 60 or 80 chapters, with 2/3 of them being applications in other fields. Not sociology but at least some connections are being made. Some of it looks naive 1/4 century later

I hadn't seen this from Gelman and friends in NEJM Evidence

They use 23,000 RCTs from the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and ask:

given a certain p-value, what sort of study have we drawn from the distribution?
