Ironic, since wasn't part of Trump's image supposed to be that he was really good at spotting talent and picking good competent people? And presumably, knowing how human organizations work.

What I noticed about the Trump administration was that most of his team seemed to be either unqualified or had bad intentions. So it wasn't just him, but the rest of the package. (And weren't there some positions that weren't filled for years, or never?)

Panicked post on Reddit about strange rumbling noises in Victoria. (We had a bunch of quakes early this morning). Apparently it's the sound of fireworks in Washington State.

Then I gradually realized that it was coming from that general direction but further away (the next block).

But the noise got my attention because it was happening outside my window. What confused me was that there happened to be roofers at work in that same direction next door, with nail guns. For a moment I assumed that's what I was hearing.

There could be some spatial stuff going on ... sound coming from the TV or a laptop is originating from inside the house, but explosions from outside might feel abnormal. When I heard the bank shootout, it was actually more muted than when I listened to Tony and Co. gaming on the stream ...

Calgary water crisis easing -- repairs safely completed, and household water restrictions are being lifted (but mayor is asking people to avoid doing multiple laundry loads etc. until service is entirely restored). No lawn watering yet.

And imagine a country with as many resources as the US, run by someone who feels it's OK to do that to their opponents at home, or who've fled to other countries. Because that's what the dictators they're pals with are doing.

It's well known amongst expats that the regime's secret police spies on and threatens people, even when they've escaped and are living in North America. I'm Canadian, of different ancestry, but if I'm scared to give details in case the regime hurts my friends ... just imagine how scared they feel.

I used to house-sit for a family that had come from an authoritarian country. They told me that the secret police had a prison that was literally underground -- there was a school with a children's playground built on top of it. Apparently the kids sometimes heard sounds from the ventilation shafts.

Victoria's looking into phasing out the firework show ... they're field-testing a drone display tonight. If it goes well, city council is talking about doing that instead. Noise and pollution complaints, and the fire risk are making alternatives more attractive.

Our friend Anthony said this back in 2017: "I would trade this in a heartbeat if he wasn't President. If I could snap my fingers and this all went away and I'm teaching improv but Trump isn't President, I would be fine with it. More than fine with it."

It might be possible to make this cake from some pre-mixed ingredients. Chris Nuttall-Smith suggests that if you're making a celebratory cake under primitive conditions (hotel room, workplace, campground) put on a lot of frosting and sprinkles.

8 -- Pour the batter into the cake pan. It shouldn’t be brim-ful (should be at least a half-inch of space). Put pan into oven – will probably take 25-30 min, likely 40 (depending on how deep the cake is, and the oven temperature). Test with wooden toothpick.

7 – Stir the dry mixture into the creamed butter/sugar mixture. Stir in the egg, then start adding milk. You can use a beater, but stirring also works. Recipe called for about ¼ C milk, but if you want the cake moister, make a more liquid batter by adding more until it’s runny and can be poured.

5 – put ½ to 1 C of milk in a cup. You may not use all of it. Powdered milk mixed with water is okay. Some people like to use buttermilk for cakes (and it’s available powdered too). 6 – in the other small bowl, crack a room-temperature egg and whisk with a teaspoon or two of sugar.

4 – in the large bowl, cream ¼ C butter or vegan substitute with 1/3 C sugar, white or brown. (You can get away with a lot less sugar, I’ve been using ¼ C or less.) Add ¼ to ½ tsp vanilla. Artificial is okay because this is baking, not something low-temperature where the flavour is more delicate.

3 – you need a big bowl and a couple of smaller ones, and probably a cup too. In a smaller bowl, sift the dry ingredients together (just under 1 C all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, ¼ C cocoa).

2 -- This is a half-recipe – best to avoid a situation where the cake rises so much it hits the oven roof and gets burnt. Pre-heat toaster oven to 375 F. (This might mean turning it up higher – check temperature with a thermometer if uncertain.)

1 – Make sure your pan will fit into the toaster oven. Mine is about 8” across, less than 2” deep. Should have straight sides, round or square both okay. Mine is metal, glass or silicone probably work too. Grease the inside.

Last weekend I learned how to make a cake in the toaster oven (which I got for $10 at a neighbour's yard sale earlier in the month). Today I managed to bake pizza. (This is my plan for cooking without having to turn on the main oven, if we get another heatwave.)

Across four tapir species worldwide, only two or three examples of twins have been documented in the past century -- and no triplets. I am trying to rationalize this as two females, with one and two babies respectively (and maybe one is an orphan who became attached).

I'm glad it's not just me. I was feeling guilty for hesitating a bit over one book with beautiful artwork, that gave a lively and well-researched account of how important forest protection is for biodiversity in South America. But it showed a family of tapirs -- parents and three young.
