Northern attitudes toward the South are too often dismissive, reductive, and arrogant. Those are our people down there fighting to be free from gerrymandered political domination and exploitation. We should be arm in arm with them, not sneering that they get what they deserve for living there.

I know they get rolled all the time but for the Times to get rolled by “actually they just want to reclaim the values of Western civilization as they see it … with larger families and fewer immigrants” is the Times putting the 14 words in the paper

The Guild of Merchant Explorers or World Wonders feel like mediums. Or that Uwe Rosenberg middle such as Applejack or Nova Luna, perhaps?

It tries to do too much yet didn't do enough. It sets up The Big Story but doesn't do a great job showing people be good at their jobs covering it. And it does a found family thing but overdoes it with how little you know or care about folks in general.
It would have been a great television series.

I think it bubbled up in the online chatter because it's newly available on Netflix.
It came out just before I moved to New York City, while I was working at a video store when it was in heavy rotation. I hadn't seen it since then.

I think Dogtooth, The Lobster, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer are bigger swings/wallops, & scarier. But these new stories still pack a punch.
I think that someone who came to Yorgos via Poor Things and The Favorite may feel like they got the rug pulled out from under them (esp if straight). /end

He does it with the same dark humor and chilliness as Kubrick - another person whose films must be strange to those who don't find them funny at times.
I liked it as a tryptich. It felt like his version of a Wes Anderson film; more minor keys, with the regular Lanthimos Players onscreen. 2/

I like Lanthimos because I read his films as diamond-cutting sharp satire about Things Straight People (Think They Are Supposed to) Like.
He teases out the absurdity from the banal minutiae of heteronormativity the way my radar pings as a queer person while watching straight-coding in film. 1/

Peter's v touching story "Keep Going" on The Moth - about running the 2013 Boston Marathon as a guide to a visually impaired runner (and being frightfully close to the bombing) - was promoted via social media among other means.
I may never had known it existed were it not for social media.

exactly this. "posting accomplishes nothing" is such a bad take. like saying people you met online aren't "real" friends. social media is a communication tool, through which you can educate, agitate, organise, fundraise, etc. if you're not seeing this you need to follow more and/or different people

We need more, but credit where due: both The Nation (June 2024 issue) and Boston Review have run a breakdown of the Project 2025 “Mandate for Leadership” document. Media Matters, too. Lots of good work going on digesting this.

It's important to note that this single-post analysis above is entirely consistent with a much more comprehensive analysis by @ketanjoshi.co showing that changes in the X algorithm and moderation policies that began in Oct 2022 have massively favoured trolls and penalized climate scientists.

The last season of Veep and the entire run of Avenue 5 felt the same way, even when those shows were in front of the actual events that transpired.
I rewatched Veep recently and it hits harder seeing everything it was doing play out in current events.

Most progressive people may not yet agree that NYT is more harm than good for democracy, and that we’d be better off with it going out of business. But I’m confident they will in the next five years.

I think it's high traffic "attention economy" because you are engaging with the NYT and spending more time potentially seeing more of their other stuff. That's irrespective of whether they are running ads.
Same with The Athletic and Wirecutter (which has affiliate links and Black Friday deals)
