Pretty astounding that Canada's 2023 wildfires emitted four times more carbon than global aviation, but these emissions are not counted under Canada's accounting standards.

"Oh SHIT we're running out of GAS we gotta extract MORE GAS" is one of the filthiest lies from Aus' fossil fuel industry, yet somehow it's also extremely successful and largely received completely uncritically every time it gets repeated by their cheerleaders

I have lots of respect for J and also very much see the phenomenon of "overprojection justifying fossil fuel infrastructure" playing out too - *but* the recent history of data centre growth does not seem to have been well projected or forewarned. Crypto is a big part imo

It seems tough to verify. I found one project at least that seems to take both funding from Team Trees but also a partner sells carbon offsets from the project. The TT website features such little information that you can't match up projects easily

Every single year has been worse than the last, when it comes to the completely obscene energy greed of Bitcoin mining.
Probably a decent chance it ends up causing more harm through this than machine learning training / inference ever will...

1.3 gigs of new gas to meet rising demand due to Bitcoin mining
Trust me when I say the Bitcoin problem has not only not gone away, but very clearly gotten worse, despite far fewer headlines about it....

I think this thread isn't about climate but GOSH does it apply perfectly. The emotional finger-wagging around despair and shock can be seriously toxic!

💡 Generating 1,000 AI images produces the same carbon emissions as driving a gas-powered car for 6.5 km...that's a lot of energy.
This surge in AI energy demand is threatening the climate goals of Google and other big tech companies.
