When I was running games as GM I always avoided killing the PC's animal companions and sidekicks. It wasn't because I was afraid of doing away with a horse, I just knew it would derail the campaign for months as my players would burn down nations to exact revenge or some other nonsense.

why not just TPK at this point? My partner's pegasus was killed, and she never played again. To be fair, she was a Paladin, whose most common words were "can I kill it?", so there's an argument to be made she should never have played at all. Not sure where I was going with this. Oh, Dont kill horse!
