This is particularly important to understand because Trumpist authoritarianism is the descendent of Jim Crow far more than say Hitler or Pinochet or Orban, and it's going to look a lot more like 1930s Mississippi than 1930s Berlin.

Yeah, I feel like the people who say it would be all positives are really not doing an honest assessment of the lay of the land here. I get the argument but the feeding frenzy we see now would just transfer, and Harris would face questions of why she backed/hid the infirm Biden for so long.

I'm really annoyed with the "There wasn't a real primary this year" argument because if people think Biden's as bad as everyone seems to think he is, someone would have primaried him. Every politician is a careerist asshole, and the people who would have run actually interact with him.

So under US v Trump a president can just never be convicted of criminal bribery because you can’t introduce evidence of official acts or motive, which are elements or that crime This is true whether or not you have been successfully impeached and tried for bribery in Congress

When I was clerking I once worked on an employment law suit where as best we could tell the literal claim was “it is unfair that my black boss is treating my black coworkers equally to me, a white man” (they were firefighters and it was about who got to drive the truck)

Of course if the president orders the DOJ to intimidate the judge or the military to surround Congress with fixed bayonets those are actions for which he is immune and can only be solved by appeals to the judiciary or Congress
