I'm here mostly for spite, but while I'm here I'll also take a good helping of video games, cats, & tea. Nothing I say, post, create or share can be used in AI generation or learning for any reason. I block AI, crypto & anything else that annoys me.

So I want to talk about this from the perspective of someone who does professional fact checking as part of my work. For some years now I have been paid to check TV and written content themed around animals to make sure it is factually accurate. Chat GPT & AI has made that job so much harder.

The ACA saved my parents from financial ruin after my mother had a bad infection following an operation, including 5 days on a ventilator in the ICU. The ACA saves lives. While I want single payer health care to replace it ASAP, we can never go back to the horror that existed before it.

"Rescission" affected mostly individual policies, not employer-based (they'd be cancelling the entire contract with that employer), but was INCREDIBLY frequent for individual policies - I remember seeing 5% per year. If an individual policyholder needed expensive care, their insurance could vanish.

Also, not mentioned in the thread: "rescission". Prior to the ACA ending the practice, an insurer could just use "rescission" to cancel any policy that became inconvenient - for example, if the policyholder was using too much care, making too many claims.

Does Project 2025 also return us to the era of Recission, aka 'well WE think you had this as a pre existing condition so we're not covering this, not insuring you anymore, keeping all the premiums you paid in, and billing you for all these things we now call part of this new preexisting condition!'?

The ACA is never secure when a Republican is in the White House. But repealing it is a direct attack on … on SO MUCH, to be honest. But one noteworthy population are babies who did nothing more than be born w conditions over which they had zero control.

Pre-existing conditions bans: insurers reserved right to limit a person’s insurability if they had certain illnesses prior to getting insured. You know what completely innocent NICU babies are? Giant clusters of pre-existing conditions. The most vulnerable, the most innocent, the most uninsurable.

Lifetime caps: some insurers would say that once a person had run up a (lifetime) bill of $2M or so, they were no longer insurable, kicked forever to Medicaid and Medicare. NICU nurses told me abt pre-ACA kids who would hit their lifetime cap before their first breath of fresh air.

Ah, FB memories serving up some winners. This is what an itemized $1,330,000 NICU hospital bill looks like (only 96 days to get there). The apple is there for scale. Here’s why I share it. Too many ppl don’t know abt lifetime caps and pre-existing bans. Bc the STILL-VULNERABLE ACA banned them.

The US government made a conscious decision after WW2 that communism was a threat and fascism wasn't. It amazes me the degree to which that gets ignored in order to act like the problem is new.

I sometimes see people discuss the American left as being intrinsically self-sabotaging, and it feels like any discussion that doesn't factor in the extent to which the mainstream reflexively shuts out and frequently actively crushes leftist activism is wilfully naive.

We have cat food bowls, and on principle I don’t mind eating out of them. The problem is the cats recognize the unique sound of those bowls so if we so much as grab one out of the cabinet, the cats come running for what they expect to be cat food.

I really don’t think most people realize just how hard the boot will come down if Trump and the Republicans win the election. Most people have never experienced the totalitarian surveillance state with the power to reach into their homes and minds at will they are telling us is their plan.
