The electoral problem has become, as the IRA gloated to Thatcher, that the GOP only needs to get lucky once and the Democrats need to be lucky forever. Either they’re going to do something about the court - now, not eventually - or we will simply play iterations of this game until the GOP wins.

Someone's probably written a 2-hour long YouTube video about this, but I'm just sitting here thinking about how when Lucas and the team made Star Wars, it was them remixing little bits of everything he was a fan of. Funny, I’ve been going through attic boxes looking for some old drives with early recording projects that I never transferred. No drives yet but I have a whole box worth of assorted obsolete cables and adaptors to use with the drives if I ever find them!

that extra scrutiny turns into higher reliability in immigration proceedings. I’d be remiss not to mention immigration hearings without noting that detainees don’t have a constitutional right to counsel until they prove their status, which definitively proves their case to stay. /3

That makes total sense and would end the issue among friends. In an immigration proceeding tho the burden of proof first falls on an individual to show citizenship, and the cases are full of heartbreaking stories about passports being disregarded or insufficient to meet that burden. Why? /1

I wasn’t able to get comfortable with the idea of my daughter being scooped up and shipped out in the craziness of the times just because I hadn’t done the paperwork and paid the tithe to DHS.

It’s been a minute since I was neck deep researching the issue, but as of a few years ago, passport records weren’t added to the DHS SAVE database used by ICE to check immigration status. Some without a CoC were deported or got deep into removal proceedings before they could prove citizenship.

That cert of citizenship for our daughter was an amazingly, needlessly long and expensive process. I was sweating bullets waiting in 2017, half-sure the orange orifice would ban issuing any new ones before hers arrived. I still feel physical relief about having it in a safe place.
