Theyā€™re not going to see what I think on here, and in any case if ā€˜97 was any guide weā€™ve got at least a decade of them ripping each other to bits like cats in a sack to enjoy first.

Now the grown ups are in charge please can we have #SureStart back?

To paraphrase David Oliver, given that 1:3 of us are likely to end up needing social care we really need to improve the standard.

Yes, and one of the consequences of Brexit has been replacing EU migration with non-EU migration in the care sector (and if youā€™re travelling halfway round the world youā€™re less likely to want to go without your family).

(You canā€™t fix waiting lists if all the elective bed stock is full of people who canā€™t leave hospital as theyā€™re waiting for social care packages)

The elephant in the room remains social care - no government has come up with a proper plan for that. Ironically the ā€˜dementia taxā€™ was an attempt to do something bold to fix it but it was electoral Kryptonite.

To be fair to the last two, I think they were willing to talk, problem was a lack of power to actually follow through. Rumour had it Barclay, for all his faults, had an agreement with the BMA that Sunak then vetoed as he didnā€™t want to set a precedent for public sector pay awards.

He definitely feels like the right chap. After so many awful MPs (including the likes of Danzcuk and Clarkson*), Rochdale, Heywood & Middleton deserve better. *laughed quite hard that he jumped to a safe seat which he then lost in the LD surge

I know, itā€™s terrible. Iā€™m no fan of the Rochdale Labour party but Iā€™m hopeful Paul Waugh will be good, and really he should have been the candidate in the by-election.

The main condition to end the strikes is going to be money (and weā€™ve not seen the DDRB proposals for this year yet), and I think heā€™s ruled that out. Bigger issue is the plan to reduce waiting lists involves doing overtime, which people are already doing lots of to keep the service afloat.

Being roundly loathed by the NHS front line before heā€™s actually taken office as SoS is a really good trick.

Surely the lesson is that chasing the Reform vote just drives voters into the arms of the LDs, Lab and (to a lesser extent) Greens?

Feels very like the Palace of Westminster where weā€™ve got important functions of state in totally unsuitable buildings because Tradition. Still canā€™t see SKS moving his family in there?

The Labour front bench is full of serious, competent politicians. And Wes Streeting. The SoS for Health is often despised by the NHS front line, but achieving that before heā€™s even taken office is remarkable skills.

I also think it has to do with who complains. If you drive to a store or restaurant, you might tell the manager, ā€œUgh, parking sucks around here.ā€ If you walk, bike or take transit, you probably donā€™t say anything. That leads to business owners believing that all their customers drive.

And then you look at urban councils where Lab can often deliver a pretty poor standard of governance and yet return vast majorities. I think it was MCC that had all but one councillor from Lab off 60% of the vote?

Yes, definitely. Iā€™d always assumed that they expected to be in coalition with Ashdownā€™s LDs (for who it would have been a red line) and committed to exploring it until they won an outright majority. Always opposed by Labā€™s local gov base though?

Iā€™m not sure. There isnā€™t the correlation between safety of seat and swivel-eyed RW lunacy that many people assume and a lot of the headbangers are out.

Today, July 4th, most Americans will celebrate their independence by sitting in traffic on subsidized highways in cars they financed via high-interest loans from multinational banks and that they fueled with dinosaur juice imported from petrostates that hate the U.S.

I think the massive difference between the LDs and the other two main national parties is that the leadership is much more accountable to the membership. I think weā€™re the only party with mandatory reselection which hasnā€™t stopped the odd Ɩpik shaped embarrassment, of course.

Itā€™s not quite that simple though. Any coalition agreement has to be signed off by the membership who are more centre left than the leadership. I think many of us would crawl over broken glass all the way to Mars to vote against another Tory-led coalition.

Itā€™s one thing to read about it but Iā€™m finally in Copenhagen and seeing first hand how quietly and easily streets can work for pedestrians, cyclists, women, kids, and all other types of people when you just design them to do exactly that in the first place
