the erosion of the internet seems like one of those gradual-sudden shifts over the last year, as AI drowns out any useful information

Whenever I look up something seemingly niche but not necessarily obscure, I almost invariably find a few links top aggregate site with like 30 questions and answers of dubious quality all stuck on a single page.

My only regret is that I'll miss out on the fun when the AI bots continue treating me as an undead architect after my passing so I shan't get to read these.

I imagine we'll eventually come full-circle: as the Internet at large becomes a cesspool of misinformation & AI crap, we'll see a return of self-contained services that maintain their own curated content. Essentially, a rebirth of services like AOL, CompuServe, & Prodigy of the pre-Internet days.

Another day, another reason to not feel so bad about my "browsing ebook deal sites* & downloading half of Project Gutenberg" habit. (* Buying mostly non-fic from 2022 or earlier). 🤷‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

My feeling is that it's been eroding badly for a while. AI will accelerate it, but I haven't noticed a big difference yet.

Yesterday I was at my in laws house for the Super Bowl. My FIL’s TV was acting up, and he was having trouble figuring out how to fix it. I eventually figured it out, but I also had to warn him “sorry, Google is useless now and it can’t help you”

I google obits for fairly obscure people for work and haven’t had problems with the stuff the article mentions (yet).

The collapse of the web has been underway for years and was obvious 3-4y ago when Google search results went bad (which was partly Google's doing and partly that the web was deteriorating). We haven't yet seen what AI will do but the web was already near death.

I’m still kind of surprised that the big platforms have seemed apathetic as their user experience degrades. It think they could fight harder. Amazon seems to prefer it

I was legit worried that AI would eventually swamp my livelihood — I’m a writer — but I am coming around to the idea that it’s so larded with spam and bullshit already — like the grey ooze of endlessly replicating nanobots — that bespoke writing will actually become more important moving forward.

Really noticed it last year. I was looking for a use for all those iron/steel/bronze bars you find in Baldurs Gate 3 had any use and Google was filled with AI halluzinated articles about a supposed crafting system that doesn't exist.

Looks like its back to niche content in webrings of trusted sites. We’ve spent 30 years trying to solve Trust online( payment, authentication, logistics, mapping, and on) only to have VCs say but yeah why trust lets mix it up a bit.
