I will grant that there are some complaints that go back so far that they can't be taken too seriously, but its also important to keep in mind how little time centuries are in the grand scale of things. We are as removed from WW2 now as WW2 was from The American Civil War.

More thoughts: in the context of the song as a whole it's clear she's saying this bc nostalgia is a form of escapism, and escapism is the theme of the song, but as an entire song it's not clear what she's trying to say about escapism, which kinda confuses what this lyric is supposed to mean.
