A good reminder. I don't know if Biden's mental state is a serious cause for concern or not, but we're seeing *exactly* the same playbook that was used on Clinton, down to the "allies are concerned" articles. And Clinton is *still* doing fine.
there are many reasons we need to win in the fall, but one of them is that i simply am not going to abide by letting both the brits and the french lecture us
My main reason for wanting electoral reform is because with the growing rise of the international far-right people in FPTP countries keep getting pushed into binary choices between "the same horrible shit as now" and "literal apocalyptic evil".
Ludditism has a tendency to be equated with the "kids these days" ramblings of Aristotle but its central thesis that technology should be used to improve the livelihoods of every day ppl rather than to sacrifice those livelihoods at the altar of Capital is as relevant now as in Ned Ludd's time.
I will grant that there are some complaints that go back so far that they can't be taken too seriously, but its also important to keep in mind how little time centuries are in the grand scale of things. We are as removed from WW2 now as WW2 was from The American Civil War.
One of my biggest pet peeves is trying to dismiss a criticism by saying "people have been complaining abt that for decades!" All that means is that the idea I'm presenting to you now is grounded in things people have been saying for a long time.
Once more for the people in the back -- just because something has become a widely accepted practice does not mean it's not a problem. There are plenty of practices across a multitude of industries that have been standard for decades and are antithetical to human wellbeing.
To protect our brave boys in blue from harassment, the DOJ has announced that 12:13 AM and PM will no longer be recognized as times. Clocks will now go directly from 12:12 to 12:14
In the US, it can only be legally sold as a milkshake if it brings 97.5% or more of the boys to the yard when tested in controlled conditions.
A shake can replace up to 37.5% of the boys with boy-like fillers and byproducts
i think that’s putting it a little harshly. *thomas jefferson* would have preordered a cybertruck. ben franklin would have made fun of him for it, but would himself own a rapidly depreciating model 3. and john adams would drive a 17-year-old honda civic
This is a huge part of why Taylor Swift is such a phenomenon. The scarf that the boyfriend keeps in All Too Well is an incredibly common experience written about in vivid and personal detail.
There's a lot of bands that fit the Ship of Theseus comparison a lot better than Atari tbh. Over 160 musicians have played in Blood Sweat & Tears, no original members have been involved since 1977, and you can still buy tickets to see them.
Quite frankly I'm opposed to it and I think questions like "what are you opposing?" or "why are you posting this?" just distract us from the real problem.
We DESPERATELY need to stop thinking of everything people say as merely indicative of what team they’re on rather than the actual thoughts of an actual human being who arrived at them by actually weighing things out and considering them and holding them up to their values.
Waiting for somebody to make a quiz where they assemble quotes from various publications against student anti-war protests across the last 60 years and you have to guess which war the students were protesting against.
More thoughts: in the context of the song as a whole it's clear she's saying this bc nostalgia is a form of escapism, and escapism is the theme of the song, but as an entire song it's not clear what she's trying to say about escapism, which kinda confuses what this lyric is supposed to mean.
Director of FBI, Christopher Wray, has initiated negotiations with Taylor Swift for the release of the 19 surviving poets Swift has held captive during the production of her latest album.
I don't want to defend Taylor Swift's 1830s lyric bc she coulda done this better but the point of the verse it's in is how memory is selective and "nostalgia is a mind's trick."
This does make me wish "Shake It Off" had existed in the 60s tho bc that song would've had a depth it doesn't in this timeline if he'd sang it while controversially shaking his hips.
A "romcom" (*cough*) "starring" AI Marilyn Monroe would not be starring Marilyn Monroe. She was a highly skilled, talented actor who trained with Lee Strasberg. An AI can replicate her physical attributes, but not her individual acting choices.
Super Robot Monkey Force Go is a show that would be up his alley. It was made by Disney during the anime boom of the '00s. I grew up on a lot of kids anime and despite it being American I liked that show more than most other giant robot shows I was watching as a small child.
Hey pals: my 3 year old has been really enjoying the Hilo graphic novels, mainly because of the giant robots. Any good giant robot/kaiju recs for preschoolers?
I bought all four issues today. If you care about diversity in Country Music, I recommend you get at least one in print. In 20 years this will be a fascinating document of a particular moment in culture that should not be forgotten but the CMA will try to erase.
(Not being taught who wrote the songs we were singing is also why I spent the first 26 years of my life thinking that 'Circle Game' was an old spiritual and not a pop song written by Joni Mitchell in 1966)
