the music in the fallout games is great bc you're like "oh cool, it's all 'period' accurate" and then you actually listen to the lyrics and you're like "there's no way this is real" BUT THEY ARE. these bitches were really writing songs about getting blown up by bombs and dying of radiation!!!
Highly recommend the Atomic Platters set. It used to come with a coffee table book discussing the phenomenon, it's a great read and a hell of a listen.
I have this old CD box set of like hundreds of songs from this era (and the gov’t radio bits about hiding under desks), this one is still one of my faves youtu.be/9RJUYlzgQwU?...
In case anyone reading this thread doesn’t know, there was a website called Conelrad that archived Cold War culture. Had a look but seems it shut down :-(
They released a compilation of “Red” and “reactionary” music from the time called “Atomic Platters” that has some deranged music.
"I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" was a song my father used to sing when he was concentrating on whatever, and it's so damn jarring to be in Fallout! Get out of my childhood memories!
Off and on I'll listen to old radio dramas (specifically sci-fi anthologies like Dimension X and X Minus One) while doing chores, and by those stories it's pretty clear that by the mid-'50s American culture was scared absolutely shitless of nuclear war
It's like how the first bikini bathing suit was named after the place where they did all those nuclear tests. Sounds like a headline from another world. Must've been a strange time to be alive
A commenter on a popular music column pointed out just how many A-bomb songs there were in the '80s, including some I absolutely never twigged to. (see: "There's a room where the light won't find you/Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down" from "Everybody Wants To Rule The World")
I use the conelrad mod for new Vegas and that playlist has some of the most rancid vibes imaginable. About 50/50 "song about getting nuked" and "song about getting nuked (racist)". Plus a couple pro Vietnam war songs which I think are the most rancid of the bunch.
This one hasn't been in Fallout, I think, but has the same insane stuff going on. Just a quaint oldtimey country gospel song about how scary the atom bomb is, but you should be even more scared of God: youtu.be/ffVIQC8pdd8?...
watched with my gf, when they dropped “crawl out through the fallout” she cracked up & assumed it had been written for one of the games as a parody & I was like “here’s the thing:”
countless layers of trauma by World War II that were pushed down, soldiers coming back after being jacked up on amphetamines, and then the dawn of the nuclear age.
They missed a few, too. I had a mod for Fallout 3 that added several dozen more of them.
The 50s were apparently weird.
Also, I learned Marty Robbins wrote a song where he called for the US to allow Vietnamese children to die from not getting blood transfusions for being communist. Regrets.
