Fireworks suck! Here are some tips from cat behaviorist Mikel Delgado for keeping your cats safe and happy this 4th of July. www.instagram.com/p/C87GFSBpgyk/
1. Make sure your cats are inside. Even if they normally go out, the 4th is not a good day for them to roam. (con't)
2. Provide lots of hiding places like boxes, clamshell or cave style beds, cat tree cubbies, etc.
3. Consider making a quiet room, i.e. put their food, water, litter, bedding, toys, etc. in one closed room - especially if you're having a party.
4. Implement buffer noises such as fans and soft music.
My boy Hazard is going to be in hisinen closet cave all night. Which is fine, I will have treats and Churus ready for him and the rest of the crew. The gray boy below, next his homey Midnight who generally does not give any fucks about fireworks.
I moved last summer and had my sense of time messed up enough by the break in routine that I completely forgot about the 4th. I was walking one of my cats at a local park when the fireworks started going off. Bad game.
This the first 4th of July for my Siamese & I'm not looking forward to it. He didn't like the very loud parade we had close to Christmas & I spent a lot of time assuring him he was safe.
We don't have a fireworks display, we do have people who do it illegally so I can't even know when to start prep
We have 3 cats & 2 are NOT friends. We lock them up during the 4th in separate spaces so the stress of the fireworks doesn't aggravate their aggression.
Mercifully mine are largely indifferent (living near a major airport has perhaps desensitized them) but are confined to indoors at all times. A departed dog OTOH was definitely *not* OK with fireworks; took an Rx from the vet for benzos to deal with that kind of anxiety.
my cat is getting a double whammy - the complex is testing fire alarms today, right before the fireworks (which he didn't like last year)
working from home today to help keep him comfortable - he needed the company
