Can’t comment on the US. But in the UK people like ex-SoS for Education Michael Gove think the *point* of history is to make people feel good about the country by giving them an uplifting story. So of course they think the point of teaching the bad bits must be to make people feel bad, even guilty.

‘Hi, let me break in on your concentration looking very closely at that picture to say I liked some skeleton drawings you did when you were a student. I am sure I am the 10,000th person who has said this to you, but please humour me because then I’ll have a tiny story to tell people.’ Hmm. Nah.

Gosh, I think I remember that! Didn’t he say something like that TV pictures have no chiaroscuro? He was always fun. Tiny Hockney moment: years ago I went all the way round the Ingres exhibition at the NG about three paces behind him. I spent the whole time thinking, this is one of our most …/

This piece sums up why the Tories lost, and not just for the reasons the author intends. “The things I failed to vocally oppose ultimately led to my defeat, our internal culture is terrible- anyway, here are some unpleasant asides about the Lib Dems and Liz Truss.

An Englishman walks into a Swiss bank. He goes to the teller, puts his face close to the glass, and whispers, “I have 2 million pounds and need to open a secret Swiss bank account.” The teller replies, “Sir, there’s no need to whisper. Poverty is nothing to be ashamed of in Switzerland.”

yes, we boiled the planet, but it was worth it to make a machine that, instead of adding two plus two, takes the statistical average of every answer to questions containing "what" "is" "two" and "plus" from a database of illegal cell phone transcripts and returns a fake nude pic of a high schooler

As an aside, it’s been underreported that the Lib Dems held on to every one of their massive by-election wins in once-safe Conservative seats. Unprecedented. Going forward this is bad news for the Tories. They’re not going to be able to shift the LDs out of the GE seats taken from them.

Very shortly, as one of his first PM duties, Starmer has to write his secret final orders to nuclear submarine commanders. ‘If you find the worst has happened and Britain is lost then fire all your missiles at Basingstoke and head for Australia.’

Sad about SW Devon. But South Devon won by Caroline Voaden, and in the end quite comfortably! As recently as November a LD insider we know was telling us their party was not going to point resources at Totnes cos sadly it wasn’t winnable. Ha! Also, goodbye Mercer — HA! Yes!

Best For Britain’s tactical voting website, getvoting.org , suggests what you are seeing is an accurate representation of voter intention. Tories and Reform together making up more than half the ballot — but Labour with a good chance of nipping through between them and snatching it! 🤞

I divide my time between London and Devon. London: very safe seats = very little election activity (a few leaflets through the letter box). Devon: highly contestable seats = heaps of activity, including talk and placards about tactical voting. So, it depends, I think.

I have spent much time here and I find it impossible to walk the streets between the piazza and the duomo in one direction and S. Croce in the other without my head filling with stories from Vasari of Renaissance artists in and around the same places. It is VERY evocative!

I think Chris Grey is misreading Starmer on this. When Starmer says he doesn’t believe Britain will rejoin the EU ‘in his lifetime’ he means exactly that: his presumption is that Britain is outside the EU for the next 30+ years, maybe forever, and govt. policy will be formulated on that basis. Sadly

Unfortunately I don’t think they do have to deal with Brexit, beyond, as you say, a ‘better relationship’ with the EU. Which is a deliberately nebulous aspiration and might end up meaning something moderately substantial — or the bare minimum re. veterinary arrangements and such like.
