Whoever in Redmond decided to move the start button should be fired, into the sun. The corner is an infinitely large button! What is the obsession with making OSX but twenty years later?!?

I think a lot more than conservatism is driven by "nostalgia for when you were 10" - a yearning for when things felt simple and right; you didn't know about the bad things in the world, and you want that feeling back

Realistically, between who is in Congress, the courts, and how little the federal government interacts with the average person's life, life under a Sanders (or any other Dem) presidency would have largely been similar to Biden's, but the energy would be very different, which says, idk, something

I've been thinking a lot lately, as a 40 year old, about how central the "charismatic savior" figure has been in our presidential elections. With Obama, Trump, and Sanders, there's been a personality-centered movement available to buy into, and how that's shaped voter excitement and expectation

Not to dig too much into the whole vibecession discourse, but America is in the middle of broad-based prosperity (real wages are up, inflation adjusted consumer spending is up, personal financial security sentiment is at relative highs, etc etc) and yet we're staring down a hugely contested election

The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared

For everyone on here that is worried that voters are as willfully credulous as our news media, the Biden campaign understands that Trumps post about Project 2025 is an admission of vulnerability and they are leaning in harder on tying him to it.

Anyway, I don’t know what the right solution is. The debate was bad but the hysteria has transformed it from a half hour of jumbled answers from an old man with a raspy voice to 90 minutes of on-air catatonia. That never happened. I certainly want to see how Biden handles his interview tomorrow.

It's telling that the NYT dug around for a monarchist weirdo (who votes lol) to write their "Don't vote" piece, instead of one of the many available exhausted leftists antielectorialists

I've been coming to terms with how my adult life has been a series of charismatic figureheads for president, basically since 2004, and certainly 2008. Especially difficult given the (former) limits on how much a president can actually do, it's a system of "things suck, where is the savior figure"

I'm gonna be honest, this is the first CT I've seen that actually looks pretty cool. The rim geometry is bad, but the metallic red actually pulls it into the cyberpunk aesthetic it's supposed to be

I remember when Trump was defeated, seeing people non violently celebrating in the streets and I remember the cops, especially NYPD, crying. You should remember this too. You should REALLY remember this.

I joke a lot about my capacity for despair, but there's enough Catholic discipline in my youth to remember that it is in fact a sin, one that absorbs all the best in you more comprehensively than a tar pit. I left the church ages ago, but I held onto that cable: despair is not a long-term good.

The media isn't interested in the biggest technology story of the 2020s, the rapid transition to clean energy, because 1) it will destroy a bunch of oil based wealth and is a boring, competirive low margin business 2) it makes Democrats look good for helping it and they want Republicans to win

Google used to have energy consultants come in and tweak their data centers each year, saving 2-3% of energy usage each time. When they put machine learning to the task, it cut energy usage by something like 40%

This is a "mumble tub" or mercury delay-line computer memory unit. It sends an audio pulse through a tube of heated mercury metal, preserving data as analogue waveforms. The transducers were in human audio range, so it was said these sounded like whispering or mumbling people when in operation
