No one wants it to be true. For the victims as well as for any other reason. But dismissing the whole thing as ‘sketchy’, as many are, is just going to reinforce the idea that there is no point speaking up, because no one will believe it and no one will do a damn thing.

C/W for graphic descriptions of sexual assault. There are a lot of “oh the whole thing is really sketchy actually” posts, particularly on other social media sites, some from people who SHOULD KNOW BETTER, and I hate it.

Thing is, so much of this is unprovable. Victims know that all that will happen is that they draw fire to themselves, especially when the person, or the organisation they represent, is beloved.

Yeah, they totally just made up a place name that sounded a bit English™. But there IS a town called Thame, and everyone (who doesn’t live there) mispronounces it “th-AIM”. (Which is odd, really, because we all know it’s the River “tames”.)

I am seeing SO MANY people today saying, “I don’t believe this because I don’t like/trust the source” And while I understand, I’m BEGGING people to think though the implications of that. And ESPECIALLY to think of the impact it might have on victims. PARTICULARLY anyone who has not yet spoken up.
