it feels like the whiteness of big political media spaces right now is having a big effect on how people are thinking about the debate. eg I have seen relatively little discussion of trump's "black jobs" comment, which immediately exploded on black twitter
To voters who are just now turning in after almost 4 years of barely paying attention, Biden sounded very old but Trump sounded absolutely 100% insane.
And moreover that when – oh what’s the name of the awful guy with the punchable face from TX? - when he was asked about it he said “I think you know exactly what it meant” and that was supposed to imply it *wasn’t* racist! Like how is that an answer that passes?!
Also Trump not answering any questions or his insane ramblings seem to not be being talked about either. Somehow that 'won' him the debate according to them.
to a certain extent, trump's debate performance can be described as "content-free, loud, confident and insulting specific groups"
and if you're in one of those groups, you noticed. and if you're not, easy to miss how insulting because of the loud confidence — who openly says racist crap like that?
In my opinion a lot of white circles more examine the vibe the politician gives off than the vibes. Trump came of as irrational and flailing, which is why a lot of people examine him by his false claims. Biden’s vibe was that he is tired and unaware of his surroundings.
you can also tell how comfortable people in media have become with basically seeing the radical right as normalized. the headline from the debate should’ve been to the effect of highlighting trump’s comments about jan 6, not recognizing the results of this election if he loses, and roe v wade 🤷🏻♀️
All kinds of reactions to “Black jobs” all over TikTok where most ppl have long forgotten MSM in large part bc of its unseriousness rooted in whiteness
The media gatekeeping of not only who gets in but where their focus must lie once they’re in deliberately acts to mitigate the damage comments like that from Trump can have to the swing voters they are speaking to.
I tapped out long before it got to that, but in looking at the transcript is the point of this word salad supposed to be "black people are only good for manual labor" because that sure sounds like what he's saying
"black jobs" dialog is a reason I cited that I will not fully leave Twitter - a raucous wealth of humor, intelligent replies, accurately deployed fire, etc.
Both the “black jobs” remark and using palestinian as a slur are hopefully clarifying as to actual Trump’s ideology and worldview, in contrast with the imaginary trump some people have built up in their heads as the memory of his administration has receded
Not to mention the whole NYT discussion of "the Democrats need to replace Biden on the ticket!"
"You mean with the Vice-President?"
"No! Literally anyone but her. Because of, um, reasons. Here is a list of 18 white men we find acceptable and Gretchen Whitmer."
I would love to see any polling regarding spanish speaking voters and their likelihood to vote for Trump. The only evidence I've seen is the Univision thing.
People pulling out the knives for Kamala Harris with this "Biden must drop out" talk, cause they don't want her to be President either. Real masks off moment.
Trump said something outright racist about Latin Americans and/or the border in pretty much every answer gave during the debate, and I have yet to even see that mentioned in a single media write-up of it.
This is a great point, and it's one of the reasons I still check out Twitter (even as the site has continued to degrade in multiple ways).
I saw a few posts, than a few more from large accounts and who were legit angry and it informed me I had not appreciated how poorly Trump's bigotry landed.
I think the consensus is that Biden bombed, and Trump did himself no favors either. Early data seems
to show that third-party candidates benefited the most.
Well, not to defend big political media that I despise. But I feel like the massive DNC fuckup to pick a corpse as their main candidate, and therefore will probably lose, is a bigger story than the racist felon said something racist. Which is their usual cycle.
Wait. By "exploded" do you mean a negative reaction to it? Or did ppl grab onto it as some desperate hope? We talked about it at work, but we are white, Indian and Asian professionals, so we have zero perspective!
I maintain that elite media has a *huge* blind spot by hiring almost exclusively elite Ivy League grads (who almost always come from independently wealthy elite families). Good journalists also graduate from Big Ten and SEC schools, deserve to eat and can provide sorely needed alternate perspectives
I saw a few of my black friends posting about it and was like, “he said that?!” and was similarly struck by the fact that it was the only place I saw it mentioned.
