The efficacy of vaccines for immunocompromised people is also its own subject. Vaccines don't make antibodies or use them, they teach the body how to make antibodies for a specific pathogen. And usually, antibodies are enough to stop a virus before it can establish itself, but not always.

There's also no indication that this applies to vaccines for other kinds of infections, such as bacteria or parasites. But the same tactic - aim for the parts that don't change - might be useful there too.

This doesn't mean a single vaccine will be effective for all viruses ever, But it could make the antibody response effectively target parts of the virus that don't change strain to strain, so they can't sneak past immunity like the common cold does every damn year.

Oh my god, this is fucking huge. It was huge when we developed a daily PrEP pill that could prevent you from catching HIV; this is a successful phase III trial of a PrEP shot that will only need to be given *twice a year*. Still needs a confirmatory Phase III, but holy fuck.
