Some of my relatives were quite explicit about telling me that the (honestly, very mild) calling out they'd taught me to do was better than the racism they were expressing. They weren't where they should have been & knew it, but they deliberately taught their kids to do better.

The communal tea tower where there's only earl grey, orange spice, and chamomile left is a real struggle and I don't think we talk about it enough.

Years ago I read a study by some “ethno-robotocists” where they took a robot squirrel and made it either: • scream • display its butthole • scream and display its butthole Conclusion: other animals run away fastest w scream-butthole combo Anyway it just occurred to me they’re probably rich now

The Wilhelm Scream has become a boring, unimaginative trope. It's so irritating it's presence now destroys the willing suspension of disbelief. Any sound designer that uses it cares nothing for movies.

I'm absolutely loving the mental image conjured by describing the behavior of the likes of John Roberts as "digging through the trash bins of history like racist raccoons looking for leftover oppression". Really wish I'd developed the skills to draw that.

Because, again: Disability is the only minority anyone can join at any time, & which everyone will join, if they're lucky enough to live that long. A disease, a quirk of genetics, a bus, a bad fall from a curb. Anything. And the only thing we have that could consistently make this fact survivable…

Trump doesn’t want Americans to know what Republicans stand for. Finally, reason from the Editorial board.

The former president wants the 2024 GOP platform to be anodyne, but don’t be fooled. He has an extreme agenda.

"300,000... at the most" is a longstanding antisemitic conspiracy theory based upon a misreading of a 1979 Red Cross document that discusses 271,301 death certificates issued at 13 concentration camps. Nazi documents themselves show the vast majority killed were not issued death certificates.

so many things about the US government that are now treated as Inviolable Precedent are based on things like "this is a number I just pulled out of my ass" and have been modified repeatedly over time until one day people decided changing the number was too hard it doesn't have to stay that way!

This is also a nice reminder that when conservatives say, "Judeo-Christian" they mean "Christian," because you know nobody at Project 2025, including the person who wrote "Judeo-Christian" below, means anything but Sunday when they talk about deciding what people can & should do on the Sabbath.

As @earlymodjustice.bsky.social points out, reform often addressed imbalances. And these imbalances were often about REPRESENTATION. 1/

Davis, CA figured it out in the 1960s and there were tons of studies through the 1970s that proved how safe and popular its Dutch-style bike lane network was. Forester and his acolytes ignored the Davis example almost entirely.
