Just ... the idea that Biden stepping down and Kamala rolling out her campaign—platform, veep, strategy, interviews, debates—that that would be BORING? Forget everything else that's wrong with that passage, you're looking at the most West-Wing-ass shit to happen this century and yawning?

I am an upper-middle class white guy but it consistently blows my mind that the Trump plan to put a permanent ICE contingent every Latino neighborhood (because that's what it would take to deport every illegal immigrant) has garnered almost no coverage. They're aren't kidding, they're gonna try.

It’s undeniable that the Biden campaign is in crisis and worthy of intensive coverage and headlines of this sort. But there is another crisis that threatens to upend and weaken, if not destroy, our democracy. The contrast in how the Times is covering these related crises is striking.

Durbin pulling his punches so as not to “ruffle the feathers” of Republicans is yet another example of preemptively attempting to prevent an expected backlash. Trying to placate the right in this way has failed over and over again, and it is important to note that the GOP rarely if ever does this.

this is even more ludicrous! durbin could unilaterally prevent republicans from blocking nominations if he simply stopped the blue slip nonsense—something republicans themselves won't honor once in power. this democracy is cooked

This a really important point. Since the New Deal at least conservatism has been premised on the idea that they are losing that it is “five minutes to midnight,” that civilization hangs in the balance, and that emergency politics is justified. I track this history in my book, FREE ENTERPRISE.

This coming week, temperatures in Death Valley will be the hottest in the recorded history of this planet. Beryl is the earliest category four storm in the history of Atlantic hurricane season. People, both now and in the future, need us to stave off fascism and build a world where they can live.

Easy to lose sight of the significance here, but the sitting president just gave a speech condemning the Supreme Court for a ruling that expands presidential power. It’s also a president who stands to benefit from this ruling, given that his opponent is vowing to imprison him and his family.

Gotta say, even my largely politics-is-not-for-me relatives on Facebook are having a fucking conniption over the SCOTUS ruling. My uncle posted "We left England because we don't want a King. Charles is an inbred." I'm not sure what one has to do with the other, but he's right.

Another thing you can do is call Dick Durbin's office and demand he stand up for democracy and haul Alito and Thomas before the Senate Judiciary Committee. And publicly demand their resignations. If you can't literally impeach them, AT LEAST use the bully pulpit. 202-224-2152.

roberts’ reasoning is fundamentally (lower-case “r”) anti-republican. i know we dunk on the framers here but roberts has issued a rebuke of the revolutionary assumption that concentrated, unaccountable power is a fundamental threat to liberty.

Where are the stories about the anger of ordinary people having their rights taken away by a rogue Supreme Court? I’ve read thousands of articles about Trumpist anger over the last eight years—but very few about the anger that the majority in this country have felt and continue to feel.

The 14th Amendment says if you were involved in an insurrection you can't be president. SCOTUS said they won't allow anyone to enforce that because of reasons they made up. The Constitution doesn't say the president is immune from criminal law. SCOTUS decided he is because of reasons they made up.

The Supreme Court’s ruling putting presidents above the law must be understood not simply as a grant of immunity for past crimes, but an enthusiastic endorsement of those he will commit if given the chance. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Yes, the consistent background assumption of the conservatives is that the cases against Trump are retaliation for ordinary presidential behavior and not an attempt to hold the former president accountable for aberrant and illegal behavior.

And yet Trump and MAGA are full of grievance and anger and victimization. The rest of the country—the majority that didn’t want these extremist Supreme Court appointments made by presidents who lost the popular vote— should rightfully be angry over this undemocratic taking away of our rights.

Not one more minute of defensiveness from the Biden campaign, please. Not one more question answered about age or debates. All day, every day, a referendum on Trump's criminality and assault on the constitutional order, on what he would be like with blank check for his lawlessness.

This is the ball game folks, the authoritarian green light laid out in advance. Congress will not impeach Trump. And SCOTUS now blesses him with extraordinary latitude to do whatever he wants in power. A second administration will not be constrained by Congress, the courts, the bureaucracy or law.

It really is an indictment of the warpedness of our political news media institutions that the Dem Party doing something very precedented is considered this unconscionable aberration & the GOP doing something completely unprecedented is considered normal to the point of not even meriting comment

An analysis of how we got here is certainly reasonable, but it is worth noting that it is exceedingly rare for a party to reject the incumbent, and it is more anomolous that the GOP chose a multiply-indicted candidate who lost the last election and fomented a coup.
