Oh, I was on the team so I can go pretty in-depth. Repair revolved around RFID tags, sometimes connected with apps (mini-games you'd solve to, say, repair propulsion) and sometimes connected with Arduino controllers or escape-room-style wire boxes. "Fixed" tasks would be calibrated in engineering.

We used Empty Epsilon, which is modded Artemis, and then built enemy scenarios that bound together bridge, fighter pilots and engineering. Hits would be audible in engineering, and then we would need to run around the ship and repair broken systems.

Yeah, this is pretty accurate, and written by someone with long-term presence in the scene. The "story games" consensus term was kind of a shrug and a "meh" rather than an enthusiastic rallying cry or manifesto.

It was not our scene's chosen name! But the term "indie TTRPG" was so contested after around 2006 that the "Story Games" forum became a rallying point, hence the label.

They are called, colloquially, "story games" or "storytelling games."

Odysseus requires just absolute gobs of labor to realize. It is an impossibly tight experience. I can tell most larp designers "Don't try this at home," but it'd be hard to dissuade them.

Odysseus Run 2 is over! For all the cinematic sets and brilliant community production values infused within the game, I only managed to snag a few photos of myself and the sets. WHAT an experience that was! Congrats to the players and the volunteers on an incomparable experience.

That's the question that starts off this weekend's newsletter. We've reduced games to their verbs. We've measured the distance between mechanics and the fiction. Now lets see what happens when we ask: what does this mechanic encourage me to talk about?

I'll also use these opportunities to learn and improve, to the extent that I can, until then.
