OK MAYBE I’ll try the rest of the series (I just binged Geek Girl which has an incredibly formulaic style - chapter after chapter begins with a factoid which segues into Harriet’s current crisis - so Meyer is already winning with her atmospheric fog and greenery)!

And the prose is no worse than Rowling’s and Stephenie Meyer funds scholarships for promising young female filmmakers rather than becoming a transphobic hellspawn so there’s that

I got the ugly duckling thing! I liked the names in general (eg her politics teacher Mr Jefferson & gym coach Clapp). I’m also for straight-up high-femme wish fulfilment - Laura Wood’s Agency for Scandal books are GREAT. I guess I enjoyed Twilight’s weirder gothic angles & wanted more of that?

It hasn’t left me with a desire to read any of the later books! Basically, I’m taking the last line of the novel - ‘And he leaned down to press his cold lips once more to my throat’ - as he kills her then and there!

An exciting week for me: I’ll be starting my new postdoc on Fred Schurink’s project, Continental European Books in Early Modern England, at Manchester. And it’s my first in-person SHARP conference! Looking forward to meeting lots of lovely book history people and a super interesting set of papers

Twilight’s depiction of Bella’s obsessive (and submissive) love for Edward is compelling tho Edward reads better as the monster he thinks he is (watching her sleep IS creepy!). The late addition of outside villains disrupts central conflict-between her desire & his ethics-rather than clarifying it.

Finally read Twilight as I’m teaching ‘Vampire Fictions’ next year: it’s fine! Perfectly serviceable YA fiction complete with unreliable preface (setting up a vampire encounter but not the one you might think), a gangly but irresistible heroine, & Byronic or Brontëan tortured anti-hero.

Writing a paper about ecological loss and wonder, focusing especially on Rachel Carson and the British authors who influenced her and whom she influenced. I think it's a rich topic but also making me even more worried about the low insect numbers we're seeing this spring. #envhum

Sunak "is best understood as the product of a postcolonial, post-Thatcherite ideology that considers social mobility as the sum total of achievement. That achievement is secured not just through 'determination and focus' but through proximity and affinity with the establishment and its institutions"

Wow. This nine page comic by Kevin Conroy (voice of Batman) and J. Bone really hit me in the gut. It's about Kevin's dysfunctional family, his early acting career, his closeted homosexuality in the 70s-80s, and coming to his audition for Batman in the early 90s.
