A couple of years ago, @mskellymhayes.bsky.social tweeted something like, "work the problem like someone who wants to find a solution, not like someone who wants to have been right," and I've thought about it so much since. It's harder than it should be but also the only way forward.

To be fair to the ST, they didn't write this headline or article, they got it from the Atlanta Times. Honestly their COVID coverage has been much better than basically any other mainstream paper, and they still prominently feature their "Coronavirus" section

I will say there is at least *some* assurance that you are installing the thing you want this way. Curling into a root shell without even skimming the code has always given me the heebie jeebies. When you install in a user account you shouldn't need root

The way I was taught was to wget a tarball, verify the SHA sums, untar and dump binaries into ~/.local/bin. Which is to this day how I install things like Golang. Things like homebrew kinda automate this process but I don't really think there's a standard

To all the abled folks that use the phrase โ€œwheelchair boundโ€ this is a beautiful example of why we in the disability community do not use those words. Accessibility devices are tools of freedom!!!

Well, do the math. Say you save 30% of your take home paycheck and you save up 25k/yr over 10y. That means you'd need to take home about 85k/yr ~= 120k salary pre-tax in NYC. That's not an absurd salary.

This is why I've mostly switched to wearing UPF clothing rather than high SPF sunscreen. It's way more reliable. The biggest issue is that covering up in super hot weather can be a bit sweltering

I use the library frequently and you should too. I can borrow academic books that would otherwise cost an arm and a leg. I can fax things for free. I can make copies. I use the study rooms. I use MNLINK to get copies of articles. My writing exists because libraries exist.

Anywho, show up every day to do what you can with others and make sure that you're attending to people's material needs while doing so. That basic political engagement will put you in good stead. The rest is noise.

But doing your work is almost always better than tearing down someone else's. And aggressive criticism from a stranger is very very very rarely generative of anything good. Build a thing. Let other people try to build their things. With a little luck, we'll meet as friends on the other side. (4/4)

A transfer chair is a wheelchair that requires someone to push it. Some of them have pushrims but generally speaking hospital chairs aren't designed for self-propulsion (and they're not very comfy either)

Transfer chair on wood chips? No, it'd be hellish. I've tried it before, the casters especially struggle. Carrying them on a chair might be easier

What the author is saying isn't wrong, however it is being misinterpreted. *During the course of an acute COVID-19 infection pre-vaccinations,* lymphocytopenia was commonly observed. Nowhere is it implied this lymphocytopenia persists or is the cause of long-term disability (e.g. long COVID).

perhaps my most cancelable take is that intergenerational movements are good, older people and younger people have a lot to learn from each other, and the idea that people of different ages should never interact for any reason because itโ€™s somehow always nefarious to do so is weird and bad, actually

feel like this is such an important point about accessibility overall people don't realize that framing someone's everyday lived experience as something inherently negative is not sympathy or solidarity it's actually extremely fucked up!

For Disability Pride Month, one thing I'd love abled bodied people to figure out is how to speak to someone with chronic health issues without implying that if they themselves had the disabled person's health conditions, they would end it all. I promise you life goes on- even with health issues.

I found ONE house on my last rental hunt that _could_ work as a one storey place w/wheelchair ramps (and now I live here!). There's a basement but I can't get down there. Had to do $4k+ in accessibility modifications out of pocket to make it work. There are few apartments and even fewer SFD houses ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

Disabled people are people and deserve opportunity, access, inclusion, and justice. If you are an able bodied person, can you make a commitment this month to educate yourself on disability justice?
