Because I've spent 21+ years studying US immigration policy and law, I have no doubt DHS would abuse it's power and be the federal agency that does the most harm to the most people. This agency is awash in resources & capacity to surveil immigrants AND citizens. See for details: shorturl.at/XfQZp

I dunno, it seems relevant that last month Clooney begged the White House to not sanction his wife over her participation in the ICC case against Israel. But that would soften the criticism and place it into context, which editor Kathleen Kingsbury simply does not consider part of her ethical duty.

Recently, I was peer reviewing a paper, and it cited one of my papers. Except... it wasn't anything I had written. The title sounds like something I'd write. It included coauthors I work with, and was in a journal I've published in. But it wasn't real. AI is not good for science.

My Solomonic view is that NYT—perhaps the president’s primary persecutor recently—showed its whole ass with this swiss-cheese Parkinson’s specialist story. It’s blatantly copied from right-wing charlatans, unvetted. And a nimbler White House and campaign would be making it pay dearly for that.

A lot of news about China Big 4 audit firms this morning including that PwC is laying off hundreds in the wake of signif client losses. No final word yet on Evergrande fine/sanctions. Reuters has a scoop about another sword of Damocles over all the Big 4. I am quoted. www.reuters.com/world/china/...

Our household made a decision to have a 45 minute reading party every night after dinner—has to be a book we haven't read, has to be for pleasure. We just sit in the same room & read. My mom comes over & the dog jumps up to sleep next to her. It's now the part of the day I most look forward to.

After decades of activism, Joe Biden’s administration finally was the one to ban USDA’s Wildlife Services division from deploying cyanide bombs on federal BLM lands. These things have killed pets and injured recreationists, and killing carnivores is bad policy anyway. Biden got it done.

Getting back to the hidden cameras, the problem is so bad that there are all kinds of guides about how to detect them! They sell hidden camera detectors on Amazon! Love living in a "one tech company sells us the tools to detect abuse enabled by another tech company" kind of dystopia. What fun.

Airbnb later dropped its forced confidential arbitration, btw, so now you can sue them when lax safety measures leads to something horrific happening to you. What a world. Bloomberg has done very good reporting on all this. This company is bad and people should stop giving them money.

Good reporting on an entirely predictable problem. Fun fact: Airbnb also covers up thousands of sexual assaults every year! Its internal safety team has "cool-down rooms" to take a break from the trauma of what they hear. It's a bad company, a bad industry, and people should just stay in hotels.

The reported piece with extracts from the husband's letters is, if possible, even more sickening. Alice Munro was the great chronicler of how humans lie to ourselves + how we evade responsibility. The facts here should be included in every article about her life. www.thestar.com/news/in-the-...

Among the many evils of "crisis pregnancy centers": they are not medical providers and so do not follow HIPAA or medical privacy ethics. Instead, they gleefully give away (to right-wing orgs) and sell (to data brokers) all information you give them. They should be illegal.
