anyway, if your solution to mental illness in america is “we should hospitalize more people”, before you get there, you have to make the case for dramatically increasing the capacity for hospitalization, otherwise, you’re just tweaking noses for the sake of it

Decades ago, closing the insane asylums: Yes! Hahaha! Yes! Now, massive shortage of mental health treatment: Well this sucks. What the fuck.

I mean I could get behind a mandate that any population center over x thousand must have y counselors per z thousand people paid for by the local government and free to the population who can refer people up the chain if theres a need to. It'd be cheaper than more cops at the least

I see San Francisco's Mayor wanting to force people into treatment, but there are NO BEDS or clinicians to care for them! Those with great insurance and who want help, are on waiting lists to get admitted, and will pay thousands out of pocket most of the time.

In California at least where this is actually happening the administration is pouring literal billions into exactly this capacity as well as less restrictive services and crisis care

right? Hospitals are already limiting admissions everywhere. Nurses/doctors already physically attacked by patients daily, with no upline authority assisting with that on any level. But sure. Lets just take ppl's liberty at our discretion and force them into medical treatment/incarceration.

like, you can’t even really engage with “hospitalize more people” because the actual facilities to do that and the staff to do that just don’t exist. it’s like arguing about what kind of food we will eat on mars.

Right the extremely obvious problem here is lack of resources and general lack of access to care. Lets spend a decade actually seriously investing in that and then see what problems remain

It's just screaming to get them off the streets and out of sight. People like the author likely would be cool with just putting them in prison too and probably doing even worse things.

Yeah - I mean, it's Freddie. His point is just to say that he thinks homeless people are weird and gross, and he wants you to agree with him and isn't it a shame that the libs are telling you they have rights?
