I think it's the wrong approach for creative disciplines. It prepares people for careers of working to deadlines and knowing the structure of the industry, which yeah, is useful for a lot of creative jobs, but having gone through a writing program like that, I don't think it helped hone my craft.

I joke a lot about my capacity for despair, but there's enough Catholic discipline in my youth to remember that it is in fact a sin, one that absorbs all the best in you more comprehensively than a tar pit. I left the church ages ago, but I held onto that cable: despair is not a long-term good.

Maybe liberals are too inherently technocratic to really know this, but, a successful party needs hope on its side, and hope isn't something that can be sold or taught, it needs to be fostered and inspired. And after squandering the high of Obama's victory, the DNC just hasn't known how to do that.

They lost again, four years into that, with another compromise candidate in John Kerry, who was pitched to appease centrists, in the interests of the broader coalition of the democratic party. We can talk until we're blue in the face about Obama's legacy, but he was not a compromise candidate.
