Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

Some interesting pop culture history in this thread. I knew some of it (e.g. Lewis v. Tolkien) but definitely not all.

Overheard on C train in NYC: "You know how the US projects its military power all over the world to do whatever the f*ck it wants? That's how I feel about pizza!" Don't know what it means but this woman really loves her pizza.

Air freight emissions have gone up. More air shipping of items that are not perishable or time sensitive since pandemic.

Article based on report by former ERDELab member Dr. Devyani Singh. Cool to see former lab members off doing cool stuff.

Remember when Instagram was a place to see people's photos? Before it became...whatever it is now. Good news. The Fediverse equivalent (PixelFed) is pretty awesome. I'm enjoying spending 10-15 minutes every morning scrolling through a feed that is all photography. 📷📸 You can find me there at:

More on how despite supposedly good faith efforts by Colorado government, the oil industry wins again. And is all set up to walk away from its debts. “Negotiation and compromise cost six years of delay with no tangible improvement” in covering budget shortfalls Regulatory delay works for big oil.

This is what bothered me when I saw that proposal to criminalize scientific fraud. Yes, you can try to limit it to cases of data manipulation, etc, and not disagreements on methods or interpretation. But that's assuming good faith actors bringing the allegation forward.

The China loans get a lot of attention because they are the majority of Kenya's bilateral debt. But that only represents about 15% of China's total debt because multilateral debt is higher (World Bank is their largest lender).

Think microsized nuclear reactors can be used to provide electricity access where it doesn't currently exist?

Not so fast. This analysis shows how both technical, economic and governance limits mean that only 2-5% of the potential market might actually be viable.

Kenya spends 61 cents of every tax dollar on repaying its loans.

Every article on the protests about the Kenyan finance bill I've seen buries that fact somewhere at the bottom.

Seems to me that's where they should start.

Canceling congestion pricing will lead to more emissions- more greenhouse gas emissions & more air pollutant emissions like soot- little pieces of unburnt diesel that go into your lungs & cause health problems. Kids with asthma, elderly folks with lung disease & heart problems. Shameful negligence.

It's always problematic to measure success in terms of inputs rather than outputs. Same issue has plagued the international "development" area forever. "We spent $X!" Yup, and what happened? "We reached Y number of beneficiaries!" But what happened?! More kids graduate? Undernourishment down?

Climate messaging also suffers from a baselining problem. "Sure, climate change is bad and getting worse, but it'd be even worse if not for climate action!" is... pretty tough to sell. It'd be much easier if people could look around and see for themselves that things are good, or at least improving.

Maybe in the abstract. But what if the ones still using gas as it winds down and gets more expensive are low income households and renters who can't afford or don't have the options to switch. Would that still be the "fair" approach. Pretty good chance that is exactly what will happen.

Thanks for the insights @chrisbataille.bsky.social. I figured you were the guy to ask.

I guess the other piece of this is that even if every refinery could switch (with higher costs as a result) not all of them would be needed. Petrochemicals are only ~12% of current oil/gas production I think.

Hate to randomly tag you into a thread @chrisbataille.bsky.social but any insight into thread above? Can refineries actually operate just to produce petrochemicals? Or will we run into problems as fossil industry winds down energy side but petrochemical demand remains high?

Petrochemicals having higher margins may be true for refineries but doesn't solve the problem. I don't think (someone please correct me) you can run a refinery to just produce chemicals. I.e. you might need that other low margin stuff to just run the plant while it makes up the bulk of the product.

(3) If demand doesn't go away for petrochemicals and the bioeconomy doesn't manage to produce widespread replacements, then what? Or maybe this is not an issue. Maybe a slimmed down fossil fuel industry just chugs along with limited energy demand and dedicated to producing plastics and chemicals?

(2) Seems like a few possibilities for petrochemicals in a post-fossil fuel era: 1) Drastic reduction in petrochemicals because system can't run on that alone or causes prices to jump (not a bad thing of course) 2) Replacement of fossil with other feedstocks (e.g. biomass). Oh boy. Can of worms.

Something I've been pondering. Assume: a) Oil/Gas demand for energy (e.g. transport, heat) goes down but... b) Petrochemical demand (plastics, etc.) continues to grow Can the current petrochemical industry survive? Can you even run the fossil industry just on that? I doubt it. Then what? (1)

There's a lot of infrastructure tied up in the fossil energy system and lots of interesting and tricky issues of what happens during the transition. Like, what happens to the gas grid as gas demand drops. 👇🏼

Interesting paper. I notice you talk about H in the pipelines as alt to decommissioning the gas network and how that is problematic. Here the other alternative promoted by the gas company is "renewable" natural gas (RNG). Has its own set of issues but they're even promoting it on the buses.
