It's a great coup de théâtre but you can enjoy watching it again knowing how it will end (which is not always the case for a story with such a twist)

It would be easy to pick holes in this, but that would be churlish. In many respects, this is Hollywood at its best: by turns moving, scary, uncynically sentimental. It owes a little debt to the scripts of Bruce Joel Rubin but it's twist is an all-timer. Love the practical effects too!

RIP Robert Towne, who crystallised the ‘ideal’ of the genius 70s screenwriter. Everyone is going to mention Chinatown, of course, but I am more likely to rewatch The Last Detail, a rough, heartbreaking piece of realism that goes against the times and does something timeless.

Thanks Ray. I'm not a huge fan of the revival Xmas ghost stories but some are more interesting than others. The Dead Room is worth checking out because it makes reference to quite a lot of strange and esoteric telly from the 70s

Perhaps I'm rather underselling this. Scorsese isn't just a talking head but takes us through P&P's work film by film, offering thoughtful but accessible analysis throughout. Currently on Mubi here

Second sitting: not many surprises for fans of P&P but full of moving testimony from Martin Scorsese on the influence of The Archers on his life and work

Probably because a lot of the filmmakers came of age in the 70s before being let loose on families. Although Jack Clayton was of an earlier generation, he's not an obvious candidate for a kids' movie either

I saw it when it came out but not since. I remember it being quite creepy but not more than a lot of other fantasy films for kids at the time. I was astonished to learn later that it was directed by Walter Murch

I saw the Pixies on a reunion tour in the 2000s and I suspect their hearts weren't really in it. I was a bit young to catch them live in their heyday sadly

Tough double bill this evening. 1/ Peter Watkins' The War Game (1966), commissioned for The Wednesday Play but pulled by the BBC before transmission, and not broadcast for nearly 20 years. A pseudo-documentary, it is very much a dry run for Threads (1984). 2/ Alain Resnais' Night & Fog (1956).

NEW EPISODE! It was our honor to welcome the essayist, poet, and critic Phillip Lopate to discuss his new collection “My Affair with Art House Cinema” and the cinema of 1959, including such all-timers as “The 400 Blows,” “The World of Apu,” and “Anatomy of a Murder.”
