The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

Given Waiheke's decades long experience with private monopolies on sea routes, New Zealanders in general should think long and hard whether they are willing to make their economy totally dependent on a very small number of (overseas-owned) companies.

Bernard Hickey on fire this morning - “it has emerged the National-ACT-NZ First Government decided to cut wages for disabled workers from the minimum wage to $2 an hour to help pay for the tax cuts that will see 64% of the benefits go to the richest 40% of the population.”

Good lord - the Guardian describes a helicopter shooting into a crowd of shoppers - bombs fired from a distance ‘cleared the hostages path to freedom’ through a shantytown. But it may still have been ‘proportional’?

The Jerusalem Post story is really interesting only in that it shows the kind of thing Israelis are reading - triumphalist military-approved bulletins totally shorn of detail.

Best most gory bit - author’s suggestion that the Emperor’s price ceiling on suddenly pricey gladiators (rarer coz plague) resulted in a Christian blood bath as they were so much cheaper. Wildest argument I’ve ever seen as to why price ceilings don’t work.

I just finished this too. Plenty of interesting detail + ideas (did the plague help the spread of Christianity? After the old gods proved so useless?) but imo the author tries to make neoliberal points about the Roman economy and vaguely apply them to pandemics in general… which doesn’t really work

Very good read here from the London Review of Books. Agree with its conclusion - the tide of international opinion is shifting against Israel, but that's a long way from securing an equitable peace for Palestinians.
