Thanks! I've been looking at Ohio's 1834 ban a bit, and it all happened very fast. A petition arrived apparently seeking a ban. A committee of three physicians (men, of course) put the ban into another a bill regulating medicine in Ohio, and it passed within a week without much debate.

Sounds like an interesting course! Do you have suggested reading on the motivations for the first state abortion bans in the 1820s and 1830s?

i think akhil amar reed captures something very important, which is that the roberts court rewrote article ii, which explicitly states that a president can be held criminally liable after impeachment (and which has long been understood to mean that he can be held liable after leaving office)

The Supreme Court’s ruling putting presidents above the law must be understood not simply as a grant of immunity for past crimes, but an enthusiastic endorsement of those he will commit if given the chance. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

The immunity decision was upside down, fretting about the indictment of Trump as a harbinger of future threats to the presidency instead of recognizing Trump's actions as a past and current one.

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.

When Republicans help Trump evade gag order to attack his trial as illegitimate, they're not just "showing loyalty" or angling for VP. They're saying that their allegiance is to Trump over our institutions/rule of law itself. Say it that way.

jd vance believes in nothing. nothing at all. he is an empty shell of man motivated solely and exclusively by a desire to amass as much power as possible. he'll do and say anything if it means he can exercise his will over other people. a genuinely dangerous man.
