I would feel better if those who are supposed to be political experts didn't beclown themselves this way. The choice is:
1) Biden
2) Harris
3) Total chaos / royal rumble, serious risk of coalition crack up.
Leading an anti-fascist coalition is very hard. There is no Aaron Sorkin solution here.
This is so silly. Aside from the fact that jumping over the VP—she IS the back-up! That's why she's there!—smacks of racism/sexism to me, there's no magical candidate guaranteed to win.
if this election is to stop fascism why would the coalition crack up? it's just need a new face to win over some low information voters. biden is behind for almost a year is polls. and there is no sharper contrast than saying i quit because it's not about me, it's about the country.
We love Whitmer but holy hell does Nick understand that most folks can't even name their US Senator let alone know anything about a Midwest governor?
Chaos lovers---on both sides.
I don’t think Harris is a choice that avoids the serious risk of coalition breakup. There are substantial parts of Biden’s coalition who (a) really don’t like Harris and (b) already think that party elites improperly intervened in the primary process in 2020 to throw it to Biden.
The "experts" around Biden did not convince him to reschedule taking the debate stage when 1. under-the-weather, 2. facing a KNOWN attacking, bullying liar, 3. with his history of stuttering, 4. while in his 80s. If they tried and Biden overruled them then his decision-making is indeed suspect.
I would also feel better if the self same pundits were going "Trump is an obvious lunatic, a felon, a sexual predator, and explicitly says he wants to be a racist dictator, he should drop out and let a real Republican run"
I'd feel better about traditional Democrats if they actually taught younger people their craft for TWO DECADES already and didn't Dianne Feinstein themselves into dying in office.
We SHOULD NOT be discussing POTUS dying in office for any other reason than assassination.
We need YOUNGER PEOPLE.
I might not be a smart guy like Nick Kristof, but I pay attention to politics and government. Gina Raimondo was a name I had to look up. Let’s do ourselves a favor and disregard any pundit who recommends replacing Biden with essentially anonymous randos.
Every person who birches about Bidens debate performance is required to record themselves answering every question and response and post it for our review before I will listen to a damn word they say
You could propose:
Biden holds a press conference from the East Room with Harris: "I don't think I can serve another full 4-year term. I'm not running, endorsing Harris, and telling all my delegates to vote for Harris."
At least that is a halfway plausible plan. Anything else courts disaster.
It’s especially maddening for Kristof, of all people, to weigh in on this issue. The guy couldn’t even meet the residency requirements to run for governor himself; where does he get the nerve to complain about how ANYONE else is doing the job of campaigning?
One of the key plotlines in the West Wing is that an unpopular incumbent president facing criticism and scandal due to his ill defies the party establishment that wants him to quit and wins re election by a landslide.
Brilliant idea Mr Kristof! we'll just have Sherrod Brown vacate his red state Senate seat to run for president. I'm sure Ohio's Republican governor will appoint a Democrat in his place so as not to threaten our fragile majority, because of civility and norms
We’re seeing in France right now how hard it is to make an antifascist coalition with limited time before an election.
The time to address all this was during the primary. Now keeping the coalition together is paramount. That means Biden or if not Biden Harris. There’s no time for anything else.
But it seems really likely to me that all of the people currently railing against Option 1 will not sit by quietly for Option 2 - which means it’s also Option 3.
I feel all choices lead to a version of Option 3.
there was a prof in Chicago saying how it would be doable in a competent political organisation, without actually saying _how_ it'd be done (or who should be the replacement), just a vague appeal to 'competence'. How are we supposed to take that seriously?
