As any historian can tell you, the lasting lesson of McCarthyism was that when bad faith partisans haul you before Congress with demands for punishment of wrongthink, if you just give in to them completely well, that’ll be the end of it.
Watching this hearing really scared the shit out of me. The combination of pure evil intent from the Congress ppl and unfortunately the complete lack of ways to handle it from the college ppl was crazy.
Couldn't they just have answered that they won't let them weaponise antisemitism over and over?
Remember when conservatives and moderates were bitching about college campuses being anti-free speech because hack comedians stopped getting riotous laughter for telling the same five trans jokes?
Not sure why I’m bringing this up right now.
Useful idiots are going to continue to say “well actually I don’t agree with everything they’re doing but they have a point” right down to the bitter goddamned end.
It's not so hard to get Columbia to do what they've been doing since November - suspending & expelling students, banning groups. www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news...
Shafik's cowardly display shows that her only concern is keeping fundraising dollars rolling in from conservative alumni and the rest of the world can burn, for all she apparently cares.
I forget… is the saying “Give ‘em an inch…” or “Give ‘em enough rope…” ? So hard to keep straight!
We’ve been giving the fascists yards upon yards of rope for years now, and I still don’t see any of them hanging. Not near enough, anyway.
wtf are the parents of these college kids doing? If my kid got arrested for protesting genocide I’d be at that university so fast. These kids are bound by 100,000s of $s in debt and now they get a record on top.
I had 2 thoughts about her testimony:
1. You know these investigations are bad-faith efforts to generate FOXNews soundbites, so why not give a full-throated defense of the university's role in a well-functioning society? . . . quickly followed by
2. What if the campus or your family gets threatened?
Did you see the NYTms piece on theatre that Neil Gaiman posted?
"What happened instead was that Mr. Dies begat Joseph McCarthy, who begat Roy Cohn, who begat Donald Trump."
