Yeah this seems undoubtedly true, and I think "it would be better to have someone who has the energy to campaign 24/7" is a very fair point. Need to be incredibly careful of action bias though when the supporting data is so messy and inconclusive.

I am very open to the idea that Harris may be a better candidate overall, but I don't think current polling can settle that. Fucking sucks because it would be much easier if there was an obviously best option we all could agree on.

It's not that I /distrust/ polls! I think they need to be understood as useful data points which require a lot of assumptions to make sense of, and which have enough path dependence built in to make counterfactuals even harder to interpret.

Occam's razor requires the solution to actually explain the situation at hand, and my (layperson!) experience of following polling on particular issues voters claim to care about tells me that taking them at their word usually does a terrible job of explaining their ultimate behaviour.

And the lack of major differences in polling b/w Biden and alternatives suggests to me concern about age likely is partly a proxy for something else that is either indicative of issues with the polls, or much deeper issues for Ds that won't be fully resolved by changing candidate.

I think the "upside" with Biden is stuff like "incumbency with a strong underlying economy" which likely won't transfer cleanly to Harris no matter how hard you try, and which would be extremely valuable in a "normal" race -- so the question becomes to what extent this is a normal election.

WTF. The electric company in Texas doesn't have a map of outages so people have been using the Whataburger App to figure out who lost power. This is like when Homer was using the Krusty Burger map when they got lost at sea.

It's one thing to fear (& yes completely understandable and even good!), another thing entirely to channel that fear into demands that established democratic (in the general sense, not party sense) processes are overturned.

Tell me I'm wrong: A bunch of the media and donor class panicked, for good reason, after the debate. Made a big coordinated push to make Biden step aside. Didn't work, wounding pride of lots of big egos. Now too miffed to concede so stuck denying that Biden can win to justify continued aid to Trump.

It's been kinda funny watching the NYT slag off Will Lewis and British journalism, I mean, look, when it became clear that David Miliband was not going to resign in June 2009, we didn't have days of coverage about a coup that was visibly running out of steam, and that was actually organised.

We really need you to collectively get better at this! Elite media journalists in particular are not smol bean observers but very active participants in the liberal democratic process, and that comes with expectations and duties which are being failed across the board in this moment

I can't really make it much clearer than "the media is also a necessary cornerstone of liberal democracy and right now you guys are collectively doing a much better job of burning down all credibility than the democratic party could ever hope to"

I kinda think this but I also think the solution in many contexts is to just be boring big tent social democrats Like I don't really see how "political violence and pinky promises to not misuse it" is more attractive than "tactical voting for the best option and engaging in party democracy"

Another very interesting expert appointment via the Lords (this time someone already in there): Peter Hendy, former head of TFL, to the Department of Transport. Makes sense as TFL an excellent model for how to run a nationalised* railway. *Let's not open the 'is TFL nationalised or not?' debate.

Yes, I absolutely do think over half the country cares about having their basic human rights taken away by a bunch of authoritarian freaks. For Christ’s sake, Project 2025 calls for banning PORN. We can get voters mad about this.
