patreon continually getting worse frustrates me greatly because it's literally a money printing middle-man service where all you've gotta do is keep the lights on and comply with banking laws, but instead they hoover up venture capital just to flail endlessly and make things worse for their users.

No romance author should EVER ignore this. I don't care if you think you're different from porn, throwing porn under the bus only greases its wheels so it can run you over next. If you write ANYTHING but very bland cishet romance you're first in line. But it will hit you eventually either way.

This is also a nice reminder that when conservatives say, "Judeo-Christian" they mean "Christian," because you know nobody at Project 2025, including the person who wrote "Judeo-Christian" below, means anything but Sunday when they talk about deciding what people can & should do on the Sabbath.

Oh, interesting: I'd never heard that. (I think I would have guessed that "tailoress" was an attempt to avoid the implication that "seamstress" was a euphemism)

If you were wondering about the life expectancy of various professions a century ago, I have an answer for you! I have many questions. Why do coopers live so long? Why mention calico printers specifically? What's killing off all the tailors? (Jefferis, "Safe counsel, or practical eugenics", 1925)

“They want to eliminate national parks” is a very simple way to get just about anyone on the Stop Project 2025 train. Are there much more glaring and life-threatening goals of P25? Yes but even your most bigoted cousin does not want to see the parks system sold for parts.

An article in the peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet, using the conservative estimate of 4 indirect deaths in Gaza for every one direct death (in other conflicts it’s been 3-15x), calculates that Israel has killed approximately 186,000 Palestinians. That is 8% of the population of Gaza.

The result was a landslide for the Tories in 2019 and for Labour in 2024. Thus: 1) contrary to what some has said, Labour has not become more popular since 2019, and 2) the electoral system is extremely broken.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

@rooie.bsky.social kindly pointed out some typos in the original. (I do these in a few minutes, so that's why.) This has the typos ironed out. Point 3 should have read "strangers do not want to actually get lost" and Point 7 correctly should read "Only in a few Special Exceptions..." etc. Thank you!

Ska, reggae, and dancehall all exist because Jamaica didn't enforce copyright laws until the late 80s, so calypso artists were free to do unregulated/pirate covers of American and British pop songs in their own idiom, which effectively created the aforementioned styles

Fair point. And yes :) I think most nouns in English can be used as verbs as necessary, though TBF if I'd heard someone say "penised" I'd have guessed it meant they were receiving one in quite a different way.

I can see what you mean about "bepenised", but I don't think it holds for "penised"— any more than if a bird was called a "striped warbler" it would mean it had acquired the stripes.

*opens private tab* I find uses from Glinner and Mumsnet going back to 2021, and hardly anywhere else. "Bepenised" from similar sources goes back at least to 2017.
