Obama was viewed as "cutting in line." Every down-ballot argument was made about him by centrists, couple with the argument - pushed by Clinton people - that America was not ready for a black president. This was obviously false, but served the agenda of folks who say nothing new is possible.

I mean, the first time he ran - when centrists said everything about him that they said about Bernie - the Democrats achieved their best down-ballot electoral results maybe ever? A supermajority? They didn't do great 4 years later but that's normal. No way to go but down from where they were.

I don't think you're being combative. It's cool. I get the reticence, and I'm not seriously suggesting Bernie should be president in the year 2024. But all these things you're saying about Bernie were also said about Obama by center liberals and he did alright.

We'll just have to disagree. Yeah, people like him a lot - me among them - but if he had different policies, his supporters would drop him. If Trump came out for Medicare-4-All tomorrow, all his voters would be right behind him demanding their free government healthcare. That's the difference.

I mean, change doesn't happen until you advocate for it. Advocating for good things is one of the biggest powers the president has. Bernie can't magically create the votes Medicare-4-All, but by making the case for it, you gradually get the public behind you. Change happens slow, then very fast.

It’s not a cult of personality - his supporters want the things he wants. If he stopped advocating for those things, his supporters would leave. See: Fetterman. As far as “government structure” and what it allows, democrats have learned helplessness. Things are impossible until they are possible.

There is a cult of personality around Trump, who doesn't actually believe in anything except making himself wealthy, staying out of prison, and drowning immigrants. Bernie is actually liked by most people and his positions are broadly popular, especially among Democrats.

I don't think coalitions are static and I certainly would not compare him to Trump.
