NEW STUDY: Broadcast, cable, and print outlets have given Donald Trump calling his enemies "vermin" a tiny fraction of the coverage they gave Hillary Clinton's 2016 remark calling some Trump supporters "deplorables" www.mediamatters.org/donald-trump...
You see: Clinton was saying that white supremacists were bad. That's worth being upset about.
Whereas Trump is talking about overturning democracy with violence. That's no big deal.
The fundamental challenge with Trump: this is so on-brand for him that it barely qualifies as news to his supporters or detractors. He plays by different rules - which is both unfair and a reality anyone running against him has to confront.
I think it's interesting but there's too many variables to draw accurate comparisons. Would coverage be this skewed if both incidents had happened at the same time? Or at least the same comparable time frame of an election cycle?
Meanwhile Matt, you do get that Clinton and Trump are old friends that attended each others weddings and whose children are friends.. right up until the Whites Only house let Trump into the fold, right?
Trump insulting someone, unfortunately is not news anymore. Pretty much the old story: A dog bites a man, it’s normal and not news worthy, a man biting a dog would be newsworthy.
On brief glance, I don’t see PBS NewsHour - which should be the gold standard in TV news- mentioned; but I sadly recall them being led around by the nose as well- and to this day, they’ve never done a reassessment, or admitted it; & they still both-sides things way too much.
they're doing it again--i think we need to face some truth about "main stream media":
they WANT him elected again, because he IS good for their business...these companies that dominate the "news" are not champions of our country and it's flagging democracy
stop watching these company broadcasts
This is especially galling because the actual context of "deplorables" was her urging an audience of snooty liberals to have *empathy* for Trump supporters. Her point was that they're not all bad! But it got covered as exactly the opposite.
I know it's been years but I'm going to die on this hill.
"The right-wing grievance machine seized on Clinton’s comments... whipping up a pseudo scandal"
Your article makes no mention of the Dems doing likewise. Is the media ignoring Dem machine efforts to make it a scandal? Or are the Dems not pushing as hard? (Genuine question)
