So to confirm, now we have near-final numbers: Every time 19 Tory MPs get a bit grumpy this parliament and stick their letters into the 1922 Committee... ...it'll automatically trigger a leadership contest.

Nothing. The King is dead, long live the King. (In practice I imagine there would be a hell of a delay and it’s possible Sunak might be asked to remain as a caretaker during the official period of mourning, but he couldn’t do anything then anyway. But on the other hand, maybe not…)

My dad (physicist) had a joke about this: When Noah sent the animals from the ark, he told them "Go forth and multiply," but two snakes said "We can't. We're adders." So he built them a log table. (Logs allow you to multiply by adding, not really useful since the invention of the calculator.)

Gern RT.

They aren't, you've misunderstood. Votes in parliamentary elections, i.e. to elect MPs, are private. The votes cast by those MPs in parliament are (rightly) a matter of public record.

This is where I have a small, boring bit of advice, from my time managing a customer contact centre for a central government department: write letters to your MP asking them to raise issues with secretaries of state; make the letters unique, not copy-and-paste campaigns; be direct, not cranky.

Thanks - depressingly predictable, but also, I stand by my suspicion that it's unlikely to be the talk of the steamie in Orkney and Shetland.

That makes sense (and is depressingly predictable), but I doubt it's going to have much resonance in Orkney and Shetland. Also, I've just googled him and it turned out he literally called for Sturgeon to be shot.

Not the main point, but odds on most of his electorate having the faintest idea what the "Bud Light incident" was? I can't remember and I'm a) Very Online and b) have close relatives in the US so sometimes read The Washington Post.

So, I think when my editor asked me to do a long list of Tory policy screw ups since 2010, he was expecting something funny? The reality was... not particularly funny.

Reading between the lines: she was weird and unprofessional (there are references to “the whole office” being aware not only of her crush but of her getting drunk at work parties) and he… might have given her a funny look following a particularly awkward moment. Not seeing what he did wrong here.

*Calling* the election was arguably just making the best of a bad job, however just about everything subsequently has been done badly, including the way he called it (i.e. not telling cabinet colleagues, but apparently telling people who put on dodgy bets).

Because, to be fair, the situation when he called the election was likely as good as things were going to get for him. Of course, he then made a number of unforced stupid decisions, but that's a separate issue.

They're really aggressive with each other and other birds, though. They're nice to humans because we sometimes dig up worms or otherwise feed them, and they're not scared of us because they know we think they're cute.

It wasn't "what's your favourite food?," though. He didn't even answer the question he was asked. "Well, it's going to be a long night so we're just having something simple and quick. Might have to be sandwiches, ha, ha." Or something.

“Do nothing, twiddle your fingers while drawing increasingly farcical and cynical dividing lines, overseeing fiscal events you know to be harmful, seeing everything you do as an outgrowth of the polls” needs to get a worse result than “govern to the last hour, don’t lay traps for your successor”.

You can tell Tesla is close to "solving self-driving" because they are down to the tough edge cases like *checks notes* trains

Not that anyone particularly cares about original meaning, but think folks should still say it out loud: For all of the things that are unclear in the founding documents and unknowabilities of what the Founders intended, "the President can kill anyone or commit a coup" was *never* legally arguable
